ANZAC Day

Apr 25, 2007 17:50

So, I've always been a big supporter of ANZAC Day. I've always believed that it's important to honour the sacrifices that others have made so we can enjoy the benefits and freedoms that I enjoy in this country today. And as a reminder to us of the price we pay if we go to war again. And I find it always touching and sobering to attend the ANZAC day ( Read more... )

I am questioning if those who died in earlier wars really did so for any better reason than those for are dying now in Iraq and Afganistan.

I think the holocaust and an attempt to take over the world would legitimize at least one of those earlier wars.

Most of the countries involved in that one were fighting to not become german speaking countries and were being attacked at home. Or were at the very least coming to the aid of countries already taken over and unable to liberate themselves. (Poland, Austria)

I don't think the causes of that war - and the war in Iraq can be in anyway compared.

The Holocaust does, certainly, but I suspect, in my cynical little world that the oppression, torture and mass slaughter of various groups of people who were generally reviled was not really that much of a motivating factor for going to war. Not wanting to become part of Hitlers little empire? Now that rings true. But then again, how long did the the rest of the world accept Hitlers little forays into his neighbours' territories before they decided it was becoming a problem?
Anyway, I'm not the expert.. that'll be user and that's not really what I was trying to convey.
I was thinking of the reasons that have been cited for the wars in Iraq and Afganistan... Like Weapons of Mass Destruction (Oops! They weren't there after all!) and rescuing Afganistan from the Taliban (6 years later people!) and thinking, that's a great PR line. In 50 years, is that how these wars will be remembered? Were the real reasons behind the previous wars just as F**ked up, and we've just been taught the PR line? Could that be the case?

Ok - most of the world didn't know about the holocaust to begin with. Probably much of Germany didn't figure out what was happening until it was too late - after all it started gradually and with a lot of propaganda to back it up ( ... )

Ok I checked.

Hitler did take over several countries - basically they didn't have enough of an army to fight back. Austria was taken in 2 days without a shot being fired. England aparently only entered the war when they started getting bombed.

So are you saying that the allies weren't justified in fighting or that they should have fought sooner when someone else got invaded - cause I'm confused as to the point you are trying to make with that bit.
