OOC: Ficlet

Stories get written when I'm bored in econ, what can I say?

It's 956 words, which officially makes it the longest piece of fiction I've ever written, so...be nice? *hides*

Characters: Lia, Cody
Rating: G, probably?

Darkness had long since settled on the library, but Lia hadn't moved in hours. Her head rested on a pile of homework -- it had been one of those weeks, and somewhere between her runes translations and an essay on goblin rebellions, her eyelids had simply given up. Too many early mornings and too many late nights had just resulted in naptime in the library, something she'd sworn she'd never do.

Sleep, at least, was peaceful, and a break from the stress that was daily life: no schoolwork, no Quidditch practice, no battle against impending doom -- and no awkward conversations about potential relationships. She couldn't decide which of these she was happiest to avoid.

Lia may have had the night off from practice, but others were not so lucky. And others weren't quite so caught up on their homework, either. Cody silently cursed his attention span as he went directly from Quidditch practice up the long flight of stairs to the library. If he was to have any chance of handing in tomorrow's runes homework, he would need to find Lia now. It wasn't necessarily that he was overly concerned -- he wasn't a Ravenclaw, after all! -- but he hated to make that class any more painful than necessary.

Besides, he figured he might need it someday.

If Lia was where he suspected (and hoped), she shouldn't be too hard to find. Although at this hour, she's probably already back in her common room, he thought. He didn't particularly pay attention to that piece of logic though, and continued on his path to the library, where sure enough, he saw someone slumped over a chair in Lia's favorite corner.

Sleeping in the library? That's new, Cody thought. He was torn between wanting to get the assignment and wanting to just watch her sleep.

Sleeping doesn't involve talking. No conversation. That won't be awkward, he thought, recalling the quick turn their conversation had taken earlier in the week. Unless she wakes up, in which case, I'm a stalker, and she definitely thinks I'm crazy.

"Lia?" he tried softly as he settled in the chair next to her, not wanting to startle her. Lia murmured something in her sleep, but didn't move. Cody sighed.

He gently rested his hand on her shoulder. "Lia?" he tried again. "Lia, you're asleep in the library," Cody said, shaking her shoulder gently. The movement was enough: Lia jumped, startled, and looked around franctically, and Cody quickly pulled his hand away.

"Wait, what's going on?" she asked, confused. "Cody, when did you get here? What time is it?"

"It's only a bit after ten, and I just came from Quidditch practice," he said. "Needed the runes homework." He tried to shoot her his most alluring smile, but it soared right past her tired eyes. She rubbed her temples, trying to work out what was going on.

"I am awake, right?" she asked, then mumbled something Cody didn't catch about a dream.

"You are now, why?" he asked. "Were you having a crazy dream or something?" He grinned. "Was I in it?"

Yes, you were.

"No. I mean, yes. I was having a crazy dream, but no, you weren't in it, why would you be?" she teased halfheartedly, rubbing her eyes.

Cody shrugged. Darn. Can't blame a guy for trying.

"Never mind," he said. "So this crazy dream, what was it about?"

"Oh, ummm..." Lia realized she'd better make up something ridiculous. "Dancing."

Cody raised an eyebrow. That didn't sound like something crazy for Lia to dream about, really.

She sighed. "Yes, umm...dancing koala bears. Wearing hats," she added.

Cody tried not to laugh at her, but once Lia started giggling, he gave in.

"Oh man, what do you think Chandler would have to say about that?" he said, laughing.

"I told you it was crazy," she said with a smile. "Anyway, enough about crazy dreams, how was practice?"

"Like I'm giving away Slytherin Quidditch secrets!" he cried in mock offense. Quidditch is a safe topic...go with that, why don't you? "Not going to happen."

Lia smirked. "Except that it definitely did at breakfast the other day," she teased.

"Yeah, well...." Cody shrugged. Breakfast was not a safe topic!

"Right, yeah," Lia said, looking down into her lap. "About that. I didn't mean to drive you out of the Great Hall. Sorry...you probably don't want to deal with my and Naia's insanity that early in the morning, huh?"

Not Naia's, he thought.

"You weren't that bad," he said. "Just...I had to get to class, you know?"

"We have the same schedule," said Lia. "I just...I didn't mean to do anything to upset you or anything..."

Shifting in his seat, he put his hand back on her shoulder. Much to his surprise, she didn't jump or make any move to take it away.

"You didn't."

Lia looked up at him, biting her lip. "I...." Her words were interrupted with a sudden, massive yawn.

"You should sleep," Cody said, changing the subject abruptly. He pulled his hand back into his lap, not wanting this to get any stranger. "And not in the library, either."

"You're probably right," she said. She pulled out a scrap of parchment and scribbled something onto it before beginning to pack up her bags. As she stood, she handed the paper to Cody.

"What's this?" he asked curiously.

"The runes homework," said Lia with a slight smile. "You might want to start that now, or Professor Herlewin's going to be upset with you."

"Yeah, yeah," said Cody flippantly. "Go sleep, and I hope you don't have any more dreams about...dancing koala bears in hats."

"Right," she said. "I don't particularly care to repeat my library dream experience, thanks."

She smiled. "Night, Cody."

"Night," he said, watching as she walked away.

How do you tell someone to get out of your dreams? Lia wondered as she walked back to the Ravenclaw dormitory. And what if you don't really want them out anyway?
