I agree with most of what you've written here, but I'm not sure if speaking out against a group is equivalent to hating that group. There are people in my life who love me and accept me as I am (a gay man), yet they sincerely believe that the Bible teaches that homosexual behavior is wrong. These people are not exercising a "right to hate" but a right to religious freedom.
On the other hand, if people are moving beyond "speaking out" into outright discrimination, harassment, and hate speech, then yes, let's prosecute them to the full extent of the law.
This may be a bad analogy, but I speak out against Republicans all the time, and I don't hate Republicans. :0)

Christ told us how we would one day worship in spirit and in truth. Many folks, in grasping a glimmer of truth, squeeze out the spirit. Others lose the truth in just seeking only the sensations that accompany the spirit of His teachings.
I don't know much about Anne Rice - except what the popular media has had to say about her - but what a deep insight she has!
