Oh, Joss, I love you, but every time TV makes me cry, somehow you're behind it.

I guess I got kinda excited about office_meta because I wrote a ton under the cut.

Oh, what a great essay. Jim and Dwight just want to LOVE MICHAEL/PAM. YES.

re: Impressionism vs. tracings -- this is a bit fanwanky, but I think it's about looking at the big picture vs. being really literal. For pre-s3 Pam, her interpretation of her own life was about a narrow focus on specific facts: I'm engaged to Roy. Jim is my friend. Art isn't a sure future. They don't even make houses like that in Scranton.

Impressionism on the other hand -- and hopefully this Pam who's growing and learning so fantastically -- is about a realistic emotional interpretation of the big picture scene. Up close it can even seem like kind of a mess, but take a step back and it all comes together... much like her life, I hope. :)

Oh, I'm so glad you liked it! And I'm so glad the point about Jim/Dwight just wanting to love Michael/Pam resonated with you.

And WOW, YES! You nailed the impressionism/tracing metaphor of Pam's character and her growth -- looking at the big picture and especially STEPPING BACK is key for Pam's growth. It could be argued that she hadn't taken full opportunity to grow until Business School, when she had to take that step back and evaluate what Gil said. And YES, Pam is finally growing out of her literal self -- that's spot on.
