Wow, this is fascinating. My experience working in the Borders cafe was really different. Once a guy in a suit left me a five dollar tip WITHOUT flirting (actually, it's true that there were a few other suited men with him). Consultant-y types tended to be nice. Lower class workers were nice, but could be flirting types. Teenaged boys (occasionally on drugs) often flirted. My least favorite customers were rich teenaged girls. I also tended not to like rich young women who wanted everything nonfat or soy. Or rich young women who didn't know what a cappuccino was, ordered it anyway, and then didn't like it.
But this was this incredibly cute--I just remembered him! Thanks for bringing back this memory!--college student with curly hair. He maybe dropped his change in the jar--or maybe I'm remembering him a little more rosily than he was--but he wasn't an amazing tipper. But he was friendly and we talked about Pink Floyd one time. Unfortunately he had a girlfriend.
Are there a lot of regulars in the ice cream business?
