Okay folks. So I'm not even sure how many people even read this any more. I don't blame you. I rarely update and it's usually something trivial ( Read more... )

Don't give up hope... anonymous March 11 2007, 00:54:02 UTC
Don't give up hope yet, I am working on one. I wouldn't think that a list of the top five books that have changed my life would be difficult, and yet it is. But don't worry- I shall persevere. It's an interesting challenge.

i'm struggling with the fact that my very top 2 books YOU gave me (the brothers k and life of pi). so i can't very well put them on the list, can i? ah well, here we go.

1. my sister's keeper by jodi picoult
2. the time traveler's wife by audrey niffenager
3. a heartbreaking work of staggering genius by dave eggers (did you ever finish this?)
4. the amazing adventures of kavelier and clay by michael chabon
5. the book of daniel by e.l. doctorow

don't be fooled by the titles of the first two, they are NOT girly books. rather, they have some of the best characterization and storylines that i've ever read. i'd even venture to say that i care more about the characters in my sister's keeper than i did about the ones in the brothers k. whoa, i know. and actually, i think you'd really enjoy all 5 of these books. so get on it.

and this road trip better pass through chicago, or i retract all my book recommendations.

I'm on it Kyle...I'm at work right now so I can't just look at my shelf to get ideas...so off the top of my head...

1. "Now I can Die In Peace" Bill Simmons...Simmons rights for ESPN.com and is a diehard Red Sox fan. The book is a collection of short articles and rants written over the span of about 5 years. He ties in references to Jack Bauer, porn stars, whatever..it's a really entertaining read.

2. "The Diary of Anne Frank" You need to read this again if you haven't read it since middle school or high school. I love it.

3. "Black Like Me" John Howard Griffin...Just a really interesting read. And fast. Really makes you wonder what's wrong with people.

4."Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" Hunter S. Thompson... I bet you've probably read this, but it seems like good traveling, soul searching reading.

5. "Catcher in the Rye" "On the Road" Hemingway's short stories...etc.

Have fun on your trip dude.

1 & 2. "cat's cradle" and "galapagos" by kurt vonnegut
3. "flatland" by edwin abbot
4. "ishmael" by daniel quinn
5. "so you wanna be a rock and roll star: how i machine-gunned a roomful of record executives and other true tales from a drummer's life" by jacob slichter (probably not relevant for you, but it's great insight on the record industry)

1. The Brother's K by David James Duncan
2. A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving
3. Les Miserables by Victor Hugo (yes, I'm a hopeless romantic)
4. Ragtime by E.L. Doctorow
5. The Giver by Lois Lowery

These are today's top five...they change daily. Talked to ktb this weekend about how amazing brother's k is, so I know you already have that one under your belt. But re-reading is a real pleasure. Oh, bonus rec -

6. Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters (for those lonely nights...)
