McCain picks Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska as his running mate.
Young, female, blah blah blah... oh, wait!
Her electoral chances may be harmed by the fact that she was placed under investigation in Alaska by state lawmakers at the end of July.
She sacked a public safety commissioner and the allegation is that she sacked him because he had not fired a state trooper who is Ms Palin's former brother-in-law, and who is in a custody battle with her sister.
She says she has "nothing to hide" and is "cool" about the investigation.
*snort* Well, it's not like there's a Republican out there without a serious electoral liability. Romney's a Mormon, Crist's a closet case, Pawlenty's a... actually, I know nothing about Pawlenty. (And now I don't need to.) was governor in Minnesota when the bridge fell down... (Thanks,

Palin under investigation:
There is a growing furor over whether she tried to get her former brother-in-law fired as a state trooper.
A legislative panel has launched a $100,000 investigation to determine whether Palin dismissed Alaska’s public safety commissioner because he would not fire the trooper, Mike Wooten. Wooten went through a messy divorce from Palin’s sister.
Palin has denied the commissioner’s dismissal had anything to do with her former brother-in-law. She denied orchestrating the dozens of telephone calls made by her husband and members of her administration to Wooten’s bosses.
Riiiiiiiiight.
(This article has today's date on it, but either it was a reprint or it was published before the announcement: "Some analysts said that because of her relative inexperience, Palin never had any realistic chance of being picked for vice president.")
Also see the italicized portion of
this blog post. Whatever her reasons, she fired a well-liked commissioner, and replaced him with a sexual harasser.
ETA FURTHER: In the "point this out to every holdout Hillary supporter who might vote McCain" vein:
Palin didn't support Clinton and "didn't like Clinton's 'whining.'". Oh, and
Palin is a creationist. And apparently
out to lunch in other ways.
ETA AGAIN: She's the gift that keeps on giving:
Sarah Palin:
Palin, who portrays herself as a fiscal conservative, racked up nearly $20 million in long-term debt as mayor of the tiny town of Wasilla - that amounts to $3,000 per resident. She argues that the debt was needed to fund improvements.
She's also scrubbing things from her website --
a 2006 ad where Ted Stevens endorses her, and HER endorsement of Obama's
energy policy.
