Did somebody roll time back to the 1960's while I was sleeping?
You know, I don't give a shit if that swimmer guy (I don't even remember his NAME) sucked on a bong or Janet Jackson showed her boob at the Superbowl, but THIS shit is offensive.
I didn't even realize until I got to the HuffPo that people were reading the comic as racist; as one of their articles (in an edit, posting comment from a reader) pointed out (although I can't find it now, of course), there's a much more straightforward analysis:
1. Assume (for the sake of argument) that the stimulus bill is capital-b Bad. 2. Therefore anyone who would draft such legislation must be stupid. 3. Oh man, they shot the chimpanzee? Who's going to write the next stimulus bill? Nobody smarter than a chimpanzee would be capable.
And this still seems to me like the more plausible interpretation: they're not calling Obama names, but rather taking potshots at the legislators responsible for the bill. The language of the comic supports this: "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill", it says, not someone else to sign it
( ... )
"This is more about the conservative worldview then racism. They really think that people hate the stimulus bill and view it as an abomination and a disaster. thus the cartoonist thinks people will get the joke that this thing must've been written by a crazed chimp. Get it? Of course not, because the vast majority of people view the stimulus bill as at least a mainstream idea, if not perfect. To most of us, the joke doesn't make sense, so we immediately assume the chimp is obama. I think this just shows that the cartoonist failed utterly because he's a biased wingnust and sucks at his job, not that he's racist."
