I have to be honest that for me, the burning of the Man wasn't really key, and in fact the Temple burn (which happens Sunday, the following night) feel much more like a conclusion.
That said, burning other people's stuff is, to put it mildly, really not cool. And what most articles don't mention is that the Man sits atop a large pavilion containing a lot more artwork and through which people wander 24/7, so not only was all of that threatened as well, but I'm told there may have been people *in* it when the fire started.
And while it sucks, it also calls attention to the fact that crap like this happens quite rarely at BM, and for a city of 40,000, that's pretty good, eh?

Yes it is unfortunatly amazing that so little happens like this. Too bad the rest of life can't be as crap free.
