A book meme...

Apr 15, 2005 10:32

My friend Eric just posted about a book everyone else thinks is great, but he just can't get through.

So I'm turning loose into the LJ world.

----------------
Name a popular or acclaimed book (or two) that you just can't make it through.

Aldous Huxley's Brave New World.
Anything by Tom Wolfe.

You know, I managed to read both of those. I don't remember much about Cold Mountain, but I had to FORCE myself to read Middlemarch. That was probably back in the days when I wanted to be more "literary". Bah!

Not even As I Lay Dying? I'm not sure anybody but English Literature grad students can get through TS&TF, but Dying is more easily endured by most.

I have read one woolf book, in college.. and I have read it 2 times since and sadly.. I cannot for the life of me remember a damn thing that happened.. not even from one chapter to another. I even would write myself little blurbs on what happened in each chapter to help myself.

faulkner: I tried reading it aloud, but whenever I picked it back up I would forget what happened. it was so horrible!

(explicit deleted) Thomas Harding. Freaking Tess of the Freaking d'Urbervilles. I want to exhume his corpse and punch him in the face.

I've never tried, and after your ringing endorsement, I'm not sure I will. ;)

Thanks for this thread librarygrrrl

Too funny!! That's exactly what I wanted to do in high school. Oh how I hated that book. Never finished it but somehow passed the test.

Heart of Darkness. I didn't try very hard, but I couldn't get through The Pickwick Papers, either.

Oh, one of my more painful memories of high school comes rushing back with that title. I shall have to try the Pickwick Papers at some point, to see what I think.
