Hey you LJ newbies

I'm no expert, but go ahead and ask questions right here (using the comment function - it's a little pencil/pad icon at the bottom here). I can help with some things or point you to people who know more! Don't worry if you're anonymous, but you'll have to check back for answers if you don't have an LJ with comment notification on. If you have an LJ ( Read more... )

Just friended you - since you pimped LJ's so insistently on the meandthee list ;) I've pulled myself together and decided to try to use my lj account a bit more in relation to fanfiction and stuff.

I have a question; can anybody (members of course) post in community LJ's such as Starsky & Hutch Fans and what is the etiquette in general?

And a comment about tags. As far as I can see, it's a good way (and the only one?) to sort posts in some way. I've visited LJ's with a mixture of fic posts and other stuff and it's extremely irritating to wade through everything just to find the stories. Are there anyway around that - an easy way? Do you tag posts (I can't seem to find any tags attached to your posts.)

Oh, and thank you for offering to answer our questions :)

Hi! I don't tag myself because I just don't post much. Everything is writing/S&H related, either fic or writing observations or questions. The thing is, what you'll find in LJ is that most people will put their fics in their memories once they're done - it's an easy way for them and for others to find them. I'd recommend that you check memories first, and also look at the front page of people's LJs for links to where their fic is archived (often at their own web page, or at a fandom-wide archive). Which reminds me I should see if this LJ format is conducive to that, and put a link to Skyhawke on the front of my LJ. :) Or, you know, you can post in people's LJs asking "Where's your fic, please? I'm new." Most people are courteous about helping new folks find stuff. With all the different LJ styles, sometimes it can be hard locating links and things.

And yes, anyone who is a member of the S&H comm can post. That's not true of every community, though - some, like crack_van, have restricted posting which they monitor, because the whole point of ( ... )

Thanks! I haven't really used the memories feature, but I will remember that. And of course I can ask the owner of the LJ, but if I want to read *here and now* I just can't wait for a reply ;) Well, you know... Just seemed like it would be easier :)

Yeah, memories or, if they archive, they'll often have a link. There's no one-size-fits-all way, because some people don't bother to archive, some don't bother to put their stuff in memories, and some just don't put links on their LJs. Oftentimes, asking will result in the person pointing you to even more fic, so that's good too. :)

Moods. Where is that located when you write a post? When I log on to LJ, all I see is my original post and not the replies I have.

Thanks!!!

If you're writing a post right there in LJ, it's WAY at the bottom. There's a bunch of small drop down menus with moods and music and the like (it's also there that you can make a post private, or post to, for instance, the S&H community rather than your personal LJ).

In your user preferences you can select being notified when someone answers one of your posts - that way you can get an email each time, rather than going back to your LJ to see if you have replies. If you don't see any replies (or any numerals next to the word "comment"), you don't have any replies yet!

What about icons? I see some people have fancy moving ones or ones with words. How the heck do they do that? From photos?

There's a slew of things you can do with icons, if you've got the time or the inclination ;) Moving graphics require some sort of animation program. Text can be added to any picture you have saved to your computer (usually .jpg or .gif are the most common formats the files will be in) with something as simple as the ol' MSPaint program, or any other picture editing program your computer might have.
