looking for some reasonably-priced suggestions for places to stay in Paris in May. i've never been. and flights to everywhere else are soo expensive. so i think i will try to talk to my boss and go to Paris.
When Laura and I were there (Europe), we spent almost all of our time in hostels, including in Paris. I have no idea which one we stayed at, and I can't recall it being fabu, but they were all okay and pretty reasonably priced. You can look at them online before you go at places like this:
did you just make up the term 'fabu'? Because if so, i absolutely love it. so.Fabu!
i'll look into hostels - i kinda wanna go that route for a couple of nights, but when PJ and i were in Costa Rica together last summer, we had a gnarly hostel experience in San Jose, which i have been trying to explain to him is not typical - but he doubts and frowns upon hostels worldwide. if i can find some place that looks okay - hopefully i could convince him, though.
i have two friends out there, so i might have them hunting for us. ideally, we could rent an apartment, but who knows.
Ginny and I stayed in the Modern Hotel right by Pere Lachaise cemetery, but it looks like they've refurbished it in the past two years, so it's more expensive now. Here's another one I found while looking for that... the only complaint I see about it is "pas de parking", so it looks pretty good.
The thing is, Paris hotels can be really 'awful' by American standards, just in terms of feeling dirty and too small and shabby, so you might have to spend at least 60 euros a night to feel 'confortable'. In that way, a hostel might end up being a better value.
Oh, it looks like this site gives slightly better prices.
Also on that site, it looks Hotel Beauséjour Montmartre might be worth looking at. Oh wait, it looks like it might technically be a hostel. It looks really nice, though; it's in a garden and everything. I'd be tempted to stay there. (Isn't that site funny - "hostile planet"?) this site has some more ratings.
wow - those websites seem really helpful! thanks, Nada! of course, all of the best places seem already to be booked - but we'll see. i think i'm slowly convincing PJ to do at least one or two of our nights in a hostel - because i am worried about the much more nasty hotel room. We've got at least two friends in the area, one at least has already offered a potential crash spot - of course what would be ideal is if any of them new an apartment or something we could rent for the week...
I stayed at a hostel in Paris, but I can't remember the name. It seemed to be a rather large and common one so if you're searching for hostels it will probably come up frequently. Another option is to go to a bookstore and check out the Let's Go guide and just copy stuff down... that is, unless you actually want to buy the book
( ... )
you made me just remember the number one thing i wanted to remember to do before travelling around any country again: sheet inserts! the little sleeping bag-things made outta sheets, you know! i might end up having to make my own with some sheets and a sewing machine - but man, essential - and i may have totally forgotten if not for you.
you're right, i need to find time to look at one of the guide books, just trying to decide whether to buy a package or a flight alone now, and haven't had the time to do any research outside internet.
