Oh dear. It does sound like the scene is set. Once you've passed that particular border yourself, it's hard to remember what odd creatures dogs and children seemed to be before you had learned how to communicate with them. I've recently become really good friends with the dog of my closest colleague, but for lack of exposition to them, I'm still wary of small children...

I hope you all get through the evening all right - and get to enjoy it, too.
