Why was a coffee shop crowded at two in the afternoon? Murphy had no idea but the wait was getting under her skin. She had to be in court in half an hour, had a suspect stewing in holding and now that the weather was warming up more murders to solve. She just wanted a coffee to get her through the rest of the day, that was all. Instead she was ( Read more... )

House's mission was coffee. A large cup of good, strong coffee: strong enough to slap his tired ass into a better state of wakefulness and big enough to warm him up. Chicago was beginning to edge out of winter, turning the corner into spring; the sun had been shining a little more during the past week and the winter-bare trees were starting to shake snow and frost off their branches. But it was still damn cold. House was used to the cold, having spent years living in New Jersey where winter turned the streets into little more than a harsh and bitter wasteland of snow and ice, however Chicago was a new city for House. New in the sense of starting a new life; and starting a new life in a place that managed to be as bitterly cold as New Jersey wasn't exactly House's idea of a thrilling way to kick things off ( ... )

That was not the response she had been expecting. Usually someone would say "watch it" or "it's okay". No one had ever called her on insincerity before. Murphy didn't know whether to be amused or annoyed. It was enough to make her take a second look.

The first impression she got was tall, older, with eyes that were intense. They were blue too and seemed more focused than the rest of the crowd. That was probably how he noticed she wasn't actually sorry.

"You'll live," she countered with a slight shrug. She hadn't bumped him that hard.

'He'll live'? The average person would have gotten flustered at his response, or become suddenly over-apologetic out of habitual politeness, or would have not said anything at all due to plain embarrassment or unexpectedness of his response. House knew how people generally reacted - he'd been a pro at jerking them around and testing their limits for years. Humans all tended to act with a herd mentality.

"You say that to all the cripples you bump into?" He punctuated his point by motioning to his cane, dropping it back to the floor again with a thump that was dulled out by the bustling noise in the coffee house.

He honestly didn't care that she'd bumped into him, apart from the transitory annoyance he'd gotten from it initially. But she was attractive. Might as well take the opportunity to chat to an attractive woman while the opportunity presented itself.

"That's pretty insensitive," he added.

She glanced at the cane, a little surprised at herself for not noticing it right away. She was usually more observant than that. Her weakness for blue eyes must have distracted her. She had to pay more attention.

There was also a slight twinge of guilt. If she had noticed the cane her apology would have been more honest and she would've been a little less sarcastic. Maybe it was the caffeine withdrawal.

"I didn't hurt you, did I?" She didn't think she had, but with that cane she couldn't be sure. He didn't appear fragile to her.

Your blog looks nice, even so it would be far better if you’ll be able to use lighter colors too as a professional design. This will make sure that a lot more readers come to check it out.Informative post by the way!
