Sometimes, when he thought she wasn’t looking, Magda would catch him staring at them and her heart would clench.
At these times, she would come up behind him and rest her head on his shoulder, wrap an arm around his waist, and place her hand over the numbers.
He would lean back against her, accepting all of the quiet comfort she could offer him.
