I, too, was largely disappointed in a lot of the movies that came out this year. There were a lot that had good elements, but very few that were GREAT (like Eternal Sunshine and The Life Aquatic [Wessssssssssssss, have my babies. Wait...that won't work. Crap.] )
I'd have to think about it a bit more before making a top five list...definitely those two, though. Off the top of my head, others at the top would be Shaun of the Dead, Garden State, and I Heart Huckabees...maybe. And possibly Napoleon Dynamite...I don't know. I LOVE those movies, but I don't feel like they should be in the top five. They kind of have to be, though, since like we said, there just weren't enough amazing films this year. Sad.
I still have a bunch of films I need to see to make my year end list, but so far it looks like this:
1.Vera Drake 2.Million Dollar Baby 3.Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 4.Good Bye, Lenin! 5.Gozu 6.The Sea Inside 7.Coffee and Cigarettes 8.House of Flying Daggers 9.Kinsey 10.Finding Neverland
The films I need to see before I finalize the list are:
The Aviator, The Woodsman, Bad Education, A Very Long Engagement, Hotel Rwanda and Closer.
It's so nice to see you again. And I'm glad that you're not getting rid of Gozu! You've come too far.
I didn't get to see 1,5,6,8,9 on your list. Who do you think will win in Best Actress since you've seen both? Swank or Staunton? I still can't get over how good Million Dollar Baby was. Even better than Mystic River in terms of favoritism.
Closer was interesting, but perhaps not enough to make it on the list. I've yet to see Aviator too.
I can't believe you didn't like Life Aquatic! But whhhhhy?
It's nice to see you too! Me too. I've been having some trouble again, though. He clawed a hole in my carpet (goodbye deposit) but generally things are still good.
You NEED to see Vera Drake. Such an amazing film.
And I think Hilary Swank will probably win, well, at least before Staunton, but Staunton is far superior.
The Life Aquatic was just boring. Ugh. I'm as big a Wes Anderson fan as the next guy, I guess I just didn't click with this one.
I know, I do feel for you. But it's Aus!!! I wouldn't mind if I don't get to see things on time.
Million Dollar Baby just came out of nowhere...and it was one of those "last but certainly not least" films. The studios didn't really promote it...I still haven't seen the trailer on tv except for my fav channel - ifc. It's really good. Clint Eastwood gets better with age.
Bad Education is not wide released in theatres yet. I saw it at the premiere. Carandiru can be a bit disturbing for some people...but it was the truth.
And I will! I don't even know why I stopped in the first place.
I don't think I could make a top 5 or even top 10, without some serious strain, so go you.
Coffee and Cigarettes just left we cold, I dunno, I didn't feel any real end to it. Or point. I have only seen one other Jim Jarmusch film, Down by Law, and I liked that one a bit more, but I'm guessing all his films have that same kind of feeling.
Garden State was nice, but overrated and uneven, in my opinion. I don't get it.
I need to get my ass to getting a copy of Before Sunrise.
That Kubrick thing sounds like a kind of a whaaaa??! experience. :P
I thought it was overrated too...and it certainly did not make a great impact on me as it did to many others. Nor did I relate to it that well. But strip all of that, and seeing that as Braff's first film, it's pretty good.
Omg, you haven't seen Before Sunrise??! Yoooooooo, move it now.
Ahh Eternal Sunshine, certainly my film of the year. I'm afraid I haven't seen the rest of your Top 5, we're usually three months behind in the UK, so it's going to be at least two months before I catch The Life Aquatic. narg. I've read a lot of negative reviews, but I'm assuming their numbskulls who just don't get it (like some of my friends who upped and walked out of a Royal Tenenbaums screening <--- !?) hell would freeze over before I feel nothing short of adoration for a Wes Anderson film, yarr!
A lot of critics brought down Life Aquatic. I think this was a film that brought out polar opposite opinions. You either got it or didn't. It's a great to way to filter out people, really. Easier to build our own race that way. haha

Poor Klaus. All he wanted was to be LOVED.

hahaha, yeah, especially when the man already has a gf (who's freakin' gorgeous btw). ALL the good ones are taken.
I agree, Napoleon Dynamite was great, but the value of it might not be list-worthy.
