NEXTWAVE - Healing America by beating people up

Jun 11, 2006 14:46

Ladies and gentlemen, I feel the need to introduce you to a Marvel comic book I have just discovered, and hopefully you will see the reasons why I think it's so cool.

A warning. If you have no interest in comics or whatever, feel free to skip this entry.

NEXTWAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, it's only 5 issues old (7 if you count the Director's Cut of issue 1 and Crayon Butchery Variant Edition of issue 5), but it's already taking the world by storm. Well.... at least I think it is.

What's it about? Let me quote the writer Warren Ellis:

"NEXTWAVE is not about Character Arcs and Learning and Morals, and Hugs. It is about cramming an insane movie into 44 pages at a time. It is about the mad thigns underpinning Marvel Comics - SHIELD, ****, **** - and it is about special effects out of Asian cinema and absurd levels of destruction and a skewed sense of humor and Spectacle and things blowing up and people getting kicked.

It is most especially about THINGS BLOWING UP and PEOPLE GETTING KICKED.

It is about humanoid Clone Things made out of engine oil and broccoli being smacked to death by a woman with a guitar."

Yeah..... so that's really as best I can sum up the plot..... because really there is no plot. Kind of.

Oh, and I'm sure by now you've notcied the "****". Yes, they are used to cover up cuss words. No, the cuss words are not revealed in the comic, you need to use your imagination. But the stars are replaced by four little skull-and-crossbones.

Anyway, on to the characters. All of which..... or at least most of which are already existing Marvel characters.

Monica Rambeau. A.K.A. Captain Marvel, A.K.A. Photon, A.K.A. Pulsar. Leader (A.K.A. most responsible and "adult") of the Nextwave group, she used to be a part of the Avengers. She keeps refering back to them. Constantly.

Tabitha Smith. A.K.A. Boom-Boom, A.K.A. Meltdown, A.K.A. "nine other codenames, all of which sucked". Yep, from the disbanned team X-Force, Tabby joined Nextwave. Mostly to blow up things and steal people's stuff. And bitch about things. And to say "Tick tick tick. BOOM." before exploding your asses.

Aaron Stack. A.K.A. Machine Man. He's a robot. He's a robot with many wonderful devices inside of him. Many sharp, wonderful devices inside of him. Also, he loves refering to people as "fleshy ones".

Elsa Bloodstone. No alias. British. Redhead. Hunts vampires and other supernatural nasties. Can you see why I like her? She is a very tough, very awesome broad. She is the one who destroyed a jeep with a guitar. She is why I started reading Nextwave.

The Captain. He's the Captain. He can't remember his real name. Why? Who knows. But it might have something to do with the fact Captain America kicked his ass good and proper after he introduced himself as Captain ****. His excuse? "Hey, I'm from Brooklyn. I'm going to call myself Mr. Friendly? Hell, no. Captain ****." He's super. Super strong, super tough, and super stupid.

Because of some legal thing, the writers could not use the head of S.H.I.E.L.D., Nick Fury. So instead, they created Dirk Anger, head of H.A.T.E. (Highest Anti-Terroist Effort). Dirk's 90, but he looks 30. Each day he smokes 200 cigarettes, 100 cigars, and drinks a bottle of whiskey and three bottles of wine with dinner, which is an animal he has to fight bare-handed, kill, tear off what he wants, eat it raw, and bury the rest of it. In New Jersey. Why does he hate the Nextwave group? Because the Beyond Corporation (which is actually a terrorist group, ironic, isn't it?) funds H.A.T.E. Nextwave, which was a apart of H.A.T.E. refuses to be supported by terrorists. So they left. and Dirk hates quitters.

Yeah, ok, I'm lazy and I don't want to paste the pictures myself, so instead, I'll link you to an lj-community called scans_daily, and their tags of nextwave.

And lastly, before you go, I'll show you one thing no other comic book has! A Themesong!

So, what are you waiting for? Go get NEXTWAVE! I'm specifically counting on finite_reality and maybe lesetchka to check it out.
