Damn. It's been forever since I've updated. I feel like a horrible person, because every time I think of something worth posting, I keep it to myself. I guess that's partly because of who I am, and partly because I'm too lazy and I can always find other ways to spend my time when I have it. I've never really been the type of person who talks about ( Read more... )

Before I actually read the whole post, I just have to say that it feels weird to hear you open it with 'damn' when my mind associates that word with people who are at least twenty. o_O

You may now return to your regularly scheduled program.

I do want to hear about exotic dancing banana muffins, by the way.

Why do you want to go vegan?
And why are you more afraid of dying in a 'boring' way?

well, I went vegan for pretty much the same reason that I went vegetarian. Even though the production of dairy doesn't kill the animal, I don't think that given the choice that they would willingly choose to live on a dairy farm. I mean, I think of it as, besides the fact that we don't even know whether the animals would ever do that consentually, and I think that they wouldn't, how would we like it if an extraterrestrial species that considered us to be inferior to them just came along and decided to inprison us and use us for meat and dairy biproducts. I'm thinking that we wouldn't like it, and there's a very good chance that these animals that we treat this way don't like it either. Or maybe I'm just insane and radical and this is a really stupid thought, or a really bad metaphore. Anyways, that's just how I feel about it.

*metaphor

They may feel uncomfortable and in pain (and I'm sure they are), but you're considering whether they may be intelligent enough to give consent. They aren't, obviously. If they were that intelligent, people wouldn't be doing that to them. You take "well, if they were smart enough, they wouldn't give consent", and sort of think of it as though they are intelligent enough to be able to give consent.

maybe they are and we just don't know it because they either don't want us to know, or we're so different from each other that we could never understand each other. And even if they aren't that's no excuse. If it is then why don't we use the vegetables and people in asylums and rest homes like that? It's basically the same thing, just with a different species. We don't want people of our own species treated that way, so why should it be any different just because they're a different species? We're not that different. We all still have the same basic needs and such.

Same questions as Rose.

We had to write about a water droplet as well. My story wasn't very interesting though.

I do want to die a boring death. Why? Because I don't want to suffer. It's not death I'm afraid of, I guess, it's just dying.

I didn't actually know you were a vegetarian. That's great. Moving to vegan will be tough -- I envy you. Are your parents vegetarians? What do they think about this? Many non-veggies don't have much tolerance for us.

I have neighbors across the street who eat meat, but their daughter is a vegetarian. She's now in grade 2, but she has been a vegetarian since she was 3, if you can believe it. The day she discovered that the pork chop she was eating was once a pig was the last time she ate meat. Is that neat or what?

Re. death -- I just think being dead is really boring. I mean, you can't get any more boring than that can you? Although I guess since you are dead, technically, you aren't bored.

The other thing about death is I hate the idea of leaving people behind. I don't want to leave my kids. Maybe when I'm old and in the way I may feel differently.

Why do you envy me?

My parents are not vegetarians, though they both were at one point in their twenties before they met each other, and they no longer eat beef or pork, so I wasn't raised eating that. They pretty much supported my decision to become vegetarian, and while my dad is less than thrilled about my being vegan, they're pretty much supporting me in that too. A couple of my best friends thing I'm insane, though. But one of them comes from a family that supports Bush, so that might explain that somewhat.

As to death, you never can know if it'll be boring til it happens, and then it's too late. Who knows, the afterlife might be exciting, if there is one, or maybe we get reincarnated. Maybe fear of death, or leaving people behind shows more in people with stronger ties to life. I'm not really sure that I have much of a bond with life, or that I really serve any purpose, so maybe that's why I wouldn't really mind so much...

I envy you because you are taking the logical final step in an ethical decision that I have not made and don't intend to make. You're the real thing.

Probably your dad is worried about nutrition since you're growing. Your parents are pretty cool to support you -- most wouldn't.

I'm not really sure that I have much of a bond with life, or that I really serve any purpose, so maybe that's why I wouldn't really mind so much...I've heard you talk like this before and I find it curious and sad. Do you really feel that way? Because I don't see that at all -- and I'm not just saying that to be a cheerleader. You're obviously very intelligent -- anyone can see that, and your acceptance at TIP just confirms it. You are a thinking person with a strong sense of values and ethics. You're a person that shows the highest respect and value for life. It seems to me that you are right up there near the top in terms of people likely to offer something valuable to the world ( ... )

real thing? as in what?

and I hope I'm not coming across as suicidal, or hating life or emo or anything, because that's really not what I meant at all, I just feel that if I die, it'll be the right time, and I have no control over it, so I might as well go out in style.

TIPpity!!! I can't wait til this summer...

For some reason, I can't get Jim Morrison out of my head. He once said that he wanted to die painfully, with feeling. Even going down in flames on an airplane would have been an acceptable death for him. I really do admire the crazy bastard. But then again, he ended up dying in a bathtub from an overdose...

Still, I heart the Doors. And what was I talking about?

I can certainly understand the sentiments driving your decision to become vegan. I've seen the conditions in which farm animals have to live... It's deplorable. Killing an animal and eating it for sustenance is something that doesn't really bother me, but seeing those animals live in crowded, unhealthy conditions and then killed en masse leaves me queasy. Ignoring the fact that eating animals that are raised and fed in such disgusting environments cannot possibly be good for us, it really is quite depressing.

And my school really does have the best vegan blueberry muffins ever.

Whee for updates!

Nobody, animals included, deserves to live the kind of life that a lot of those animals live. And I heart muffins. *hugs*

perhaps, perhaps not, but shouldn't we live as if it does in case it does? It's not like you have anything to lose if it doesn't.
