What would you like to know?

I remember I did so, yes.

The same as before, to see how you teach people to stop fearing it.

I need someone who is afraid of it, then.

Some of us, do believe in equal work for equal pay, in work being valued above status, in from each according to their means and to each according to their need.

We are not... the same as privileged overlords. I can understand how it seems that way - but some of us prefer equity over inequity, I swear.

Do you. Then I suppose you don't take advantage of the things you're given over us. You don't go to the warden areas, you don't use your private bath, you never ask the admiral for things.

You never force an inmate to ask their master's permission to work or to help or to teach, or value a warden's word above an inmates means or need.

More words with nothing behind them.

I could happily do without. I have not asked the Admiral for a single favour since I have arrived here.

As for that - my interest is my patients. I value their well-being above any warden's word. But, as I said at the time, to do that, I require someone to vouch for you. It is as simple as that.

And my point wasn't about specific incidents. It was more that... we're not feudalistic ruling classes. We might be, in your view, injust and unreasonable - but a lot of governments are. A lot of systems are entirely imperfect - and that is always open to change and movement. But setting us up as monoliths compared to the power structures in those worlds is as much generalising as us, say, presuming inmates are not to be trusted.

Which you do. You wouldn't require someone to vouch for a warden.

And if you aren't the ruling class, why so many little things to mark your status? What does it gain to force us to bathe together? To keep us from drinking, or swimming, or walking in sunlight, but to keep us down and elevate you?

I'm not generalizing. I've been here long enough to see how this system works, and I've seen enough of them to know that if you're part of it, you support it, no matter how different you claim to be.

Not to mention that the Wardens don't have any power restrictions, but force us to--unevenly, meaning that it's easy as hell for some inmates to victimize others. The Wardens want to make us dependent on them for protection by taking our weapons and powers away, but when we need that protection it is not forthcoming!

And even easier for the wardens to victimize them. We've seen how little they'll do against their own.

The promise of protection is only another chain to hold us with. So long as they keep holding it out for next time and people keep believing in it, they never need to follow through.

I've always believed in loose-knit teams, people who decide things by talking it over instead of basing everything on one leader's knee-jerk. I mean, if you have to have government, people need to have a say.

Here, though...we have the Admiral, unreachable save by his very diverse group of angels. Sometimes it really bothers me.

The people have no say in any government on my world, so it's not so unusual to me.

And here we have the wardens, who support the system by participating in it, by controlling our bodies, our minds, our freedoms. It's not all on the Admiral. They could break the ranks if they wanted... but our happiness, our safety isn't in their interest. Only that we change to suit them so they get paid.

I know you think I'm an idiot? But what about absolute monarchy didn't work before don't you understand? I know just as well as you do that a government run and controlled by one person and a handful of dignitaries doesn't reflect the will of the people, and usually doesn't have their best interests at heart either. And I'm not even just talking about the Fire Nation. We all need to work together to repair the damage done during the war, or the same cycle of hatred and assumed superiority will just continue.

Things are going to change, and we're all going to work to get that accomplished. You're just too stubborn to see past my family's history.

So you don't believe in the right of a king to rule?

What would you have then?
