Well, in my opinion it's not a step down either, seems a step up to me, and in England they're paid rather well too. Starting salary of 20k+ apparently, and they're in demand. The problem is is that people tend to think of nurses as not being a very academically hard sort of thing, although nowadays there is a nursing degree people can take rather than just the diploma and there are postgraduate entry levels too so I think that's changing. I guess it's 'cos a lot of people think of nurses as being lower than doctors, which I don't think is fair since surely both are necessary for good healthcare, and being a nurse sounds a bit more fun than being a doctor. Less pressure about accidentally killing people, and more interactions on a day-to-day basis with the patients.
