Yeah, it's all about what you want from your job. Nursing gives more patient contact, but medicine is more diagnostic. Depends really whether you want to solve social holistic people things or symptom of diseases. You need both, just depends what you want. I feel i've got the biology down anyway from my biology degree, but i'd rather spend my day looking after my group of patients, getting to know them and helping that way. I would like to become a nurse practitioner though one day, best of both worlds, get to diagnose as well as treat and discharge, but only in certain fields, like emergency departments.
Wow, LJ revival! Nice to know what you're up to, Zoe :) Do you get the 'Why didn't you study medicine' question often? Not sure how people perceive it over there - here nursing's so terribly underpaid that nobody wants to do it at all... very sad.
Nursing here is graduate only now (used to be degree or diploma), but it's got a graduate wage either way, so it's not badly paid, though some would argue it's badly paid for the amount of stress and unsociable hours... It's not something anyone would ever do just for the money, lol, that's for sure. I think the problem is that these days nursing has progressed into an autonomous professional role in its own right, but the media's perception of it hasn't changed, and they often get the roles of hospital staff muddled up and assume everyone who isn't a doctor is automatically a nurse, so we get bashed in the papers for a lot of stuff that isn't actually anything to do with nursing...
