Half Time
Pushing his way through the throng towards the bar, getting nowhere fast, coming to a sudden and shocked halt when he clocked just who it was ahead of him, who it was turning around with drink in hand, almost choking on their mouthful when the same realisation hit home.
‘Well this is a surprise! You might've said you’d got a ticket. We could’ve come together. Been nice, that.’
Gene only glowered and fiddled with his increasingly crumpled programme.
‘So… You enjoying it then?’
His mouth was dry and he still hadn’t got a drink. Didn’t seem much likelihood that he would now.
‘Blimey Gene, what are you here for? Spose they’re all a load of prancing nancy-boy poofters to you and…’
That was enough to make him find his tongue.
‘Course I’m bloody well enjoying it! Wouldn’t be here otherwise, would I? Makes me glad to be alive, glad to be British. Proud! That’s what it makes me!’
Somewhere in the distance a strident buzzer sounded the call.
Sam smiled and glanced at his watch.
‘Second half’s about to begin. What about I meet you outside afterwards, buy you that drink you never got? Think we could both use it.’
Gene nodded curtly, blustered something, and disappeared back into the crowd.
In his seat again, watching the players take the field, he wondered whether his heart might just pound right out of his chest in excited anticipation of what was to come.
These were men he recognised, men of his own mettle.
He almost wished he could be down there with them.
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot:
Follow your spirit; and, upon this charge
Cry 'God for Harry! England and Saint George!'
