1.
She didn’t like Roxy Music. Oh, most of the girls went giddy upon seeing Bryan Ferry or Paul Thompson, and most people her age - men and women - loved their songs. But, she had been raised on more traditional singers. Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, and Perry Como were some of her favorites. She had seen the albums in Sam’s flat, had seen the stacks he flipped through (every free Saturday), at Vinyl Heaven, and she knew he would never want to take her to a Tommy Steele concert. Roxy Music, however...

When saw that they were playing at Free Trade Hall, she knew it was a golden opportunity. If she smiled enough, maybe Sam wouldn’t notice she wasn’t enjoying the music.

2.

She agreed with Ray. When he said they should pull in Paulie Baxter, Sam ranted and railed that they had no evidence. He shouted that Baxter had an airtight alibi for the night of the last attack. He screamed that by chasing down Baxter, they were wasting valuable time they could be using to find the real killer. Annie had seen the crime scene photos, though. She had talked to the victims. She had seen what the bastard had done to all those women. All she wanted was for the Guv to drag him in by his ankles and give him the interrogation of his life, even if he wasn’t the culprit. No woman should ever be put through that kind of abuse.

But, when Sam looked to her for support, he was standing there on his own. He was angry and frantic and totally alone in his beliefs. When he looked to her and asked for her opinion, she just couldn’t tell him her true opinion. So, she held her tongue and simply nodded.

3.

He was supposed to turn right.

Annie knew exactly where the hardware store was. Her father had taken her there on numerous occasions when she was growing up, and she had continued to go there when she finally rented her own place. In fact, she was on a first name basis with the store’s owner and his wife. She knew exactly where the shop was located on Sherborne Street. She also knew how much men hated being told directions. So, when Sam made a left instead of a right, she simply smiled and sighed.

She knew Sam would never understand why she giggled to herself for the next forty-five minutes, while he sat there cursing and banging on the steering wheel.

4.

She had organized his birthday party. It was the first birthday he’d be celebrating with CID, and she knew Sam believed no one knew when his birthday was. He never said it, but she knew he thought no one would care. Annie herself hadn’t even known until she’d stumbled across his personnel file. She knew he wouldn’t want anything extravagant; Sam didn’t like that much attention on himself when it came to such personal things. But, she would have felt awful had they not done anything.

So, she made a cake, put Chris in charge of balloons, and politely asked the Guv to provide a nice bottle of whisky. When Sam walked into the Railway Arms, completely unsuspecting, she saw the sudden gleam in his eyes and knew he appreciated it.

Annie never told him she’d organized it, but as soon as he looked at her, she knew Sam suspected she’d been behind it all.

5.

She was pregnant. This, she desperately wanted to tell him. However, she didn’t find out herself until after the accident. She didn’t want to tell anyone until she told Sam. While they were searching for a body, she struggled through the morning sickness, the spotting, and the headaches alone. No one could know before Sam. When they told her they were ending the search, Annie fainted. She woke in the Guv’s office. He was sitting at his desk wearing the same pale expression she guessed was on her face.

Annie knew then that she’d never be able to tell Sam. So, she told her Guv. She suspected she wasn’t the only one to cry that night.
