My brother has worked for our paper, the Sacramento Bee, for nearly three years, first as a news aide and now as an intern staff writer. You'd be surprised at how many errors slip through the cracks because of the editors are simply not up to date on pop culture. Also, many jobs and promotions are attained through networking and company politics, as opposed to qualifications and actual work. There was a design job that ended up going to a guy who has virtually no design experience--but he's married to the woman who runs the city desk.

The truth is that writing for paper newspapers and some magazines is an aging profession; there are very few people under the age of 30 at the Bee and it's not exactly a podunk paper that employs just a few hundred people. My brother's big selling point for why he should get the internship was that he's young and would be able to tap into the youth market.

I do understand thatthere's the 'networking/who knows who' element this this industry, so I guess I'm not surprised by your brother's situation. I know a number of people that write for lesser known or local papers/magazines/online publications, and they work hard for their stories/articles and have professional standards. I guess I'm just expecting at least similar standards (in grammatically correct English and the actual content) for these national or international publications.
I know I'm only quoting music and popular culture here, so ok maybe I can say 'older' people don't understand and maybe calling everyone that has black hair emo doesn't really hurt anyone. Unfortunately, this kind of ignorance of the subject matters or the act of making sweeping statements about situations that aren't really true seems to happen in more serious topics in the things I read. You and me might well question the things we see, but some people probably just believe whatever they're told.

EMO? GOTH? GOTHEMO?? kiyomizu37 August 23 2006, 02:56:28 UTC
I understand what you mean...even in my local paper, I read articles with awful writing and I wonder why the story/stories were even published.

some of my friends and I tease each other about being 'emo', just 'cause some of the characteristics, like you said, don't make any sense. it bothers me when some of my friends are instantly stereotyped 'goth' or 'emo' just because they wear black clothing ?? well, i've been labeled 'preppy' so we just can't win...

and I came across this clip... :P

I find it kind of disturbing and funny...all the comments made back and forth after watching this clip.

Haha thanks for the clip! =D It's funny!

Well it's fine to joke and make fun of others in good humour, but making hasty judgements bases on how someone looks is just stupid. Haha preppy, why do you wear khaki? It could be worse I guess! =P
