We had big plans for celebrating the 4th of July here.
We could have attended a local event where there was going to be a man dressed up like "A character from America's past." and who would be reading the Declaration of Independence. There was also mention of a flag raising ceremony. I wanted to go and represent the state of Arkansas!
Unfortunately we overslept and missed the event. Which wasn't totally bad news because it means...we got some sleep! After days of laying in our beds all night sweating and tossing and turning we were all so pleased that we got some rest....I'm sure America will understand.
And we could still have watermelon, hot dogs, and fireworks! Right?
It started off good because I was able to find a watermelon. A tenny, tiny, banana sized one that I paid an arm and a leg for but it would do. I only need one arm to eat it with right?

I've mentioned before how much Alex loves watermelon, he just dives right into them! Back home in the summer, 90% of his diet was watermelon. Good think they were cheap, I could buy a huge one that would last him a week for just $3.50.

He was so excited when I brought it home! Poor guy hasn't had one since we left the states. He wanted to eat it right away and was not overly pleased when I told him he to wait until after our hot dog dinner. Every 5 minutes "I eat the watermelon now?" I finally got him side tracked and he forgot about the delicious watermelon for a while. Until I was having a web camera chat with my mother later and told her I had found a watermelon. He heard me and ran in yelling "Is it time to eat my watermelon now?!" I calmed him down again. But later, at snack time I told him he could have some fruit...I was thinking an apple or a banana. He puffed out his chest and proudly said "Watermelon is a FRUIT! I have that." lol
Ok so having such wonderful luck with the watermelon I set out to get some hot dogs. They are different here- not called "hot dogs" of course but rather "frankfurters"....they are twice as long but super skinny. You can't put that in a bun. What do they do with them? Put them in a baguette? That's just wrong on so many levels. I did find some "American Hot Dogs" but they were in a can! (Wha...Why?)Finally I found some "jumbo" ones that would do if I cut them in half. But no hot dog buns to be found....I had to go with some type of "finger rolls" that should be ok if a bit tough.
Whew, with that out of the way I tried to find some fireworks. I know that I have seen them in the Chinese stores before but today they were no where to be found. I even tried asking staff but each time got the same response "We No Have!". The kids were disappointed....but said "Well, at least we still have watermelon....if Alex will share."
Happy 4th of July everyone!
