I worked at a daycare and kids are smart. a lot smarter than parents/adults give them credit for. From my experience the child probably really just was being fussy and didn't want to do what the parents said or knew that when mom comes home or was leaving it meant he was going to bed soon and just wanted to put up a fuss to stay up longer.
I don't think kids get overly disconnected from their parents and even if they do a little i think it could be a good thing. I know way to many people who can hardly go to university because even now they are to stuck to their parents... but then again my mom stayed home with me and I do nothing but roam the country and spend little time with them. Its different for everyone and every family. I think it all depends on how much time the parent spends with the child when they are home and how much of it is "quality time". That makes all the difference.
