It varies. A real programmer would have some kind of spreadsheet that scrapes the booking websites and updates various scenarios in real-time, but I have a short stack of index cards instead.
Oddly, the cheapest route is probably to do it as a short series of nested round trips to NYC and London, do the continent via Eurostar/TGV/regional airlines, and do HKG separately. Works out to about 1600 when I did the math a few days ago. But I'm still going around the world.
(Some tickets are actually bought. I don't even have much choice anymore.)
