002. Middles

A roar of frustrated annoyance rattles up the stairs and Alison Blaire, aged ten and a half (the half was very important), cringed. She'd expected it, but it still startled her somehow. She cast a desperate look around her bedroom for somewhere to hide before heaving a resigned sigh and simply remaining where she was.

With a child's sense of inevitability that comes from knowing one has done something one has been told repeatedly not to do, she waits.

Heavy footsteps on the stairs and then her bedroom door swings open to admit her infuriated father brandishing a large, shallow, white box at her. "How many times," Carter Blaire demanded of his daughter, "Have we been over this?"

"A couple of times…?"

That answer never works when dealing with a lawyer. Her father heaves an exasperated sigh. "Every. Single. Christmas. Alison… I don't care how much you hate coconut. You cannot smash your thumb into every piece of candy to find out what's in the middle…"
