Current Reading List

Ah yes, so here it is at long last, and I've decided it is to be a reading list of a sort. I just finished up with my semi-newest arrival, that being Dragon Bones by Patricia Briggs, and while I don't support sticky tabs font on a book cover, it was an excellent read overall and I can't wait for the sequel to come out(unless of course it's out and ( Read more... )

The Magician's Guild is one that's on my reading list! It was recommended to me by another LJ friend, jmeadows. You should check out her journal (she's on shikuchi's friends list, too); she's a writer and she has ferrets--sometimes she posts videos to youtube.

Right now she's writing a pretty cool-sounding fantasy story whose main characters are these two thieves.

Hmm well I thank you for telling me, mayhaps she'll let me take a look at it....so, exactly how well does she take to strangers asking about her works?

And as for The Magician's Guild, well after we've both finished reading it, we'll have to discuss it and share reviews, as it isn't often that I'm reading what most others are reading.

I don't think she'll share it--I think she only shares with people she knows pretty well (which isn't me, yet, for instance), and only when it's done-ish--but she posts the types of things that are going on as she writes, so you begin to get a sort of sense of it over time.

Yeah, I'd love to talk about The Magician's Guild when we're both done!

Good, I don't get to discuss books with people all that often unless I let people borrow something from my collection, not that I mind doing that, but *shrugs* No one dares ask over the summer.

On another note, could you ask shikuchi to check her livejournal, I want to talk with her for a bit.

I haven't read the Carvans, but she just got a seven figure deal (!!!!) for a new series.

I quite liked Flewelling's NIGHTRUNNER series.

I admire Dana Stabenow's Kate Shugak books, but am not crazy about her Liam Campbell novels, and didn't like much her thriller BLINDFOLD GAME. And her Alaska mystery anthology THE MYSTERIOUS NORTH, despite authors whose work I have liked in the past, was unfortunately one of the worst collections I've read, and many weren't even mysteries! A big disappointment.

Mmm yes, so far the Nightrunner series has been quite enjoyable, as was the joint Kushner.Sherman novel The Fall of the Kings, but that's another story entirely, and best left for another time.

As for Dana Stabenow's books, well I thank you for the heads up on what not to read before I migrate from the little short story anthology I am reading (Powers of Detection), that she played editor for and also added one of her stories into if I remember correctly, to her actual novels, though I wonder, what do you recommend from the various genres?

Her Kate Shugaks are really good, but try and read them in order, because the relationships develop, so certain things serve as spoilers for earlier volumes, if you know how things are going to turn out.

I have only just found one of the SF trilogy, so haven't yet read those.

The problem with her Liam Campbell series is that the character is not as invested in the setting and with the people who surround him, as Shugak is, and where Alaska is almost a character itself.

Good advice for sure, but I tend to read things in order anyway. It never feels right to pick up in the middle of a series and spoil the overall flow of it. Though I'll add the Kate Shugaks to my list of things to get my hands on when it become possible for me to do so...I'll go with the first one and see how I react to the story and overall development.

'The problem with her Liam Campbell series is that the character is not as invested in the setting' Yes well that is understandable, I tend to shy away from things with characters who aren't invested in the setting as it is, unless of course there is something else overly amazing which manages to dwarf the said flaw in comparison, so *shrugs* Thanks for the heads up.
