When magic and mystery come together, one gets Powers of Detection, a collection of short stories edited by Dana Stabenow. And so as I have finished all of the short stories within it, some of which had quite a bit of shortcomings, and others which I happened find rather well written and rewarding throughout, I figured that it wouldn't hurt overly ( Read more... )

Hmm I suppose that sometimes that's true...more often than not n fact. But still, every once in a while people need to be pointed in the direction of an exceptionally good book. Though I doubt I'll be telling anyone to go pick this up, as I usually only do that with things that truly stand out above all else and make some sort of impact.

I think The Prince is what I'd want to start with, based on your appraisal. And then, maybe Lovely!

Right now I'm reading Mort, which I highly recommend, The Stolen Child, which really really irritates me and may make me write a post, and Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, which is very good but takes a lot of concentration (so I usually read the other two). Also Pride and Prejudice, but that doesn't count because I've read it before.

The Magician's Guild will be next (when I get it). I'll maybe add The Prince to the list--or should I start with an earlier one by her?

Well if you're going to starts reading her novels, then I'd suggest either starting with the standalone first in the world of The Blood, which is called The Invisible ring and is quite good, though if you want some of her best set in that world, then you're best off starting with Daughter of the Blood, which I own and can lend to you once Kim finished up with it and returns it to me.

Well, these all sound very interesting. I would like to read... Lovely, because of your good review, and the Judge sounds curious indeed.

The Nightside Needless to Say sounds like a good setting indeed... What a shame. Someone ought to write a story in Nightside that is actually... satisfactory.
