I've been trying for a couple of days to write a Harry Potter retrospective, talking about what the series meant to me and all that, but every time I try, I realize that it's not possible for me. It's not possible because I don't believe that this fandom is over or diminished just because the last movie came out, anymore than I believe Star Wars ( Read more... )

It will be interesting to see where the series goes from here. The franchise is too much of a cash cow to stop at book seven.

If they continue the HP universe in some shape or form, the fandom will last for a long time. If they decide to let it go after book seven (a very, very stupid idea from a financial point of view), then I don't see why fans would stick around. Even Trekkies had novels for lulls in-between series/movies.

A lot of my friends in the fandom have been glad for the lack of new books, largely because with RP going on and everything, they all love being able to fill in the blanks themselves (imagine how annoying it would be to RP a character for years and then find out that you'd been doin it rong all along and have to start from scratch). That said, they really are going to have to keep producing at least something, and from what I understand, Pottermore may be just that.
