Today was the last day of my internship, and I didn't get offered a full-time position. This had nothing to do with my performance and everything to do with the blasted economy, which has been cheerfully trolling me since 2009. Seriously, I feel like every time I turn on CNN, I should see a trollfase somewhere or someone at the news desk should ( Read more... )

Checking with Verizon East for tech writing contracts, and having some tech writer buddies check for things. Will ping if I find any leads.

I vastly appreciate it ♥ It'd be nice to be able to use my degree, you know?

XD Yeah. It'd be nice to not see $40k go down the drain.

Oh gosh, hon, that sucks. I really hope it's not necessary for you to move without him, and that you can find something out there in Texas at least while he's finishing up school. You shouldn't have to be separated from your husband. :-/

The ideal situation was going to be that I could take the semester to work on my writing and work part time while he finished his degree, but then his job went away, too, so we're basically like "ffffff--"

But yeah. I hope it works out that way too :C

There are tons of tech. writing jobs in New York, particularly Long Island. Northrop Grumman, CA Technologies, InterDigital, Cold Spring Harbor Labs, Brookhaven Labs - they all need tech writers, at least according to the job postings I've seen. I know it's not one of your desired locations, but figured I'd mention it anyway.

Actually, we were both seriously looking at NYC, since Kyle's field is marketing and lol New York. The only trouble is that the salary would have to be a lot higher for there (or for LA, really) since I'd be paying for my own rent plus for him to have the place here. But I've definitely been looking.

ALSO, the internship ending is why I haven't gotten your beta reading back to you yet. I want to make sure I do a good job and am using comments and everything!

Yeah, cost of living is insanely high. That's the one drawback. But, I can tell you from experience that it is possible to find affordable housing that isn't condemned. You just have to look really hard.

Don't worry about the beta reading. Take as much time as you need. Two of my readers have already gotten back to me and they have given me plenty to chew on in the meantime.

*nods* It's the one real worry I have about moving elsewhere, since most of the places we're considering are much more expensive than Texas. We've got a really nice place here for less than $1000/month, but I know that would get us maybe half of what we have now elsewhere, so :\

♥ I will try and get it done today!

I'm actually in a very similar situation.

I'm currently living in an area in Florida where film jobs are practically non-existant. A classmate of mine from college is offering me two free months of rent in the west Los Angeles area if I agree to move in November and be her roommate until June. The crappy part is that I would be separated from Jordan for seven months.

I'm most likely going to do it, though, because we both believe that we can tough through it if it means that we'll finally be settled in one place. If you and Kyle have toughed through months of not seeing each other and you've both taken the leap to get married, then I think you guys will be fine.

(Also, we can totally hang if you move out to LA >_>)

*nods* I figure we'll be fine being separated for months, especially since (God-willing) I'll be making enough money that we can go back and forth and see each other until he's able to join me. It's more just reluctance on my part to be away from him. I'm willing to do it, if it means getting our feet under us again, I just... would rather not.

(XD Excellent, half the reason I was thinking about going to LA is because Kat is already out there, so yay being a 2 hour drive from my bffl instead of a 2 hour flight, and that would only make it better, having you there to hang out with too. WE COULD HAVE ADVENTURES)

Good Catch Publishing is a Portland-based Christian publisher seeking a new project manager/editor to oversee the production of non-fiction inspirational books. We're looking for extremely organized, motivated self-starters who love people, love editing their stories, and most importantly, love the work of the local church.

They pay $1K per completed project, and telecommuting is just fine. I don't know the scope of the projects, so that may or may not actually be a decent deal, but worst case its nice supplemental work.
