History: Alice's homeworld is one reasonably similar to our own, though what it lacked in technology was replaced with progress in magic and sorcery (though that was a talent reserved for people born with the gift of spellcasting, it could not be something learned). She was born in a mansion in the hills of a village called Rougetton, to a man and woman named Nathaniel and Rosalin, respectively. In her childhood, Alice was raised to be a 'prim and proper' kind of lady, and her parents went to great extents to ensure that she did not become a spoiled child. However, they were also very overprotective of her, and did not let her leave the sprawling house for anything. She was taught by a tutor and provided with books for entertainment by her parents, but it wasn't quite enough for her.
Alice was very curious and eager to see the outside world, perhaps thinking it would be as idealistic as it was portrayed in her storybooks. It seemed exciting and brilliant, and she begged and pleaded with them to finally let her leave the walls of her relative confinement.
It took a long time before her parents gave in, but on her eleventh birthday they finally did, taking her into town for the first time. There were many people and things to see, and Alice couldn't get enough. She dutifully obeyed her parents and stayed by their sides--at first. From the top of town square she could see a large lake that sat by the foot of a mountain. She requested to go and see this lake, but that request was denied. It was too far away, her father said, and they should really be getting back soon after all.
But curiosity overcame obedience, and Alice slipped away from her parents, in the split second in which they were distracted. She had to see this body of water! Would it be as brilliant as the illustrations she'd seen? It took a long while, but eventually she reached the lake, avoiding her parents as they searched desperately for her not too far away. Desiring to try and swim like those fish she'd always wanted to see, she dove right in.
Having never been taught to swim, however, she drowned.
While her body sunk beneath the water, her soul then left to the Otherplane, a mysterious 'dimension' where ghosts and spirits lay, that overlapped the living world, invisible to those still breathing. It was essentially the afterlife. Alice remained there for several years, though her time spent in that realm would later become a complete blur.
In the meanwhile her parents, heartbroken but determined, desired to bring their daughter back in the only way they knew how. A person's life could be restored in an expensive ritual known as Rebirthing.
And after five years or so had passed, they finally got in contact with someone with the power to perform the ritual; a sorceress known as Othelia. The ritual was costly, and her parents were forced to pay several thousands of dollars to convince Othelia to do it. In their minds though, it was worth it. And one summer afternoon, the ritual was finally performed, resurrecting their Alice.
To their confusion, however, she was nowhere to be found. Where was their daughter? Had the ritual failed? Othelia shook her head, and replied that those Rebirthed could only materialize from the Rebirthing Spring; an enchanted body of water that lie within an underground cave system, many miles from where they were.
And at said spring, Alice pulled herself out of the water, confused and dazed. Her originally brunette hair had turned white, as had her skin, and her green eyes were now a bloody shade of red. Anyone brought back by a Rebirthing ritual suffered a price, and that price was not merely cosmetic. This changed body of hers could no longer stand the sunlight, or else her skin would literally burn. Although that explained why the Rebirthing Spring was situated underground: so that the Rebirthed would not completely fry just moments after coming back to life.
Within the cave system, near the spring, there was nearly a city of those Rebirthed, all with chalky countenances and crimson eyes. And all alone in this dark, strange place, Alice was forced to learn and discover everything out on her own.
The cave system was also shared, however, by people who were not Rebirthed, but lived here regardless. Most of them were very poor, and had nowhere else to go. Many, finding the Rebirthed to be undead freaks, taunted and abused them, shining lights upon them mockingly. Occasionally a few of the wealthier people from above ground would drop by, and they too would look upon the Rebirthed, Alice included, as spectacles to be scorned. They were unnatural, they had died before, and they couldn't live in the light. To them, that was justification enough to view and treat the Rebirthed like monsters. It was difficult for Alice to get used to this new life, and without a home or a bed or anywhere to go, she was very lonely. Occasionally she traveled to the surface world hidden beneath a cloak to gather food and water, but those trips only lasted so long. The slightest bit of skin revealed to the sunlight and it would be agony; the risk was simply too high.
Her parents searched the caves and the underground 'city' of the Rebirthed, but never did find her. Despite all this, Alice was admittedly glad to be alive, although she could not remember anything that had happened in the Otherplane. That was common, she had been told, and she shouldn't worry about it, though she wondered what it had been like from time to time. She was older than she had remembered being when she was last alive, too, and guessed herself to be about fifteen, so that was the age she gave herself.
Despite the rough circumstances, however, her love for the world was not diminished.
Personality: The first thing that's obvious about Alice is her extremely polite, reserved demeanor. She's well versed in manners and very rarely raises her voice. Her speaking style is 'proper', though not clipped or arrogant. She comes across as someone very feminine, calm, and patient. In most cases, she's also slow to anger. However, one thing that never fails to make her irritable is feeling pain from a light source.
She holds some bitterness over the fact that she cannot go out into sunlight any longer, and as such she's actually very envious of the people that haven't been 'reborn' like her. She's also rather touchy about her appearance, and will respond coldly to people who comment negatively about it. The fact that she and the other Rebirthed were treated as pariahs and freaks has left her distrustful, and has caused her to want to initially distance herself from people beyond anything other than casual acquaintances. This, in turn, can make her appear cold to others.
Despite her overall mistreatment from her peers, she is not shy, and feels free to speak her mind when appropriate. She isn't ever outright rude, but her words can be rather blunt.
Once warmed up to someone, it becomes clear that there's more beneath the calm surface, and that she's actually a compassionate, dreamy individual. She has a great love of learning, and is eager to hear others' opinions and viewpoints, even if she may not always agree with them, as they help her look at the world from different perspectives--something she finds fascinating. To her, life is something intriguing and amazing, ever changing and growing. There's always something new to see, and a new way to see. She deeply values the world and its people, even if she somewhat resents having been brought back from the dead.
As such, Alice objects deeply to cruelty and unnecessary violence, and will try her best to stop those things, even if she is not very influential or powerful.
One of her biggest motivators is her desire to find a 'cure' for her current state, so that she might be able to enjoy the world to its fullest again. She dislikes needing darkness to survive, despite it being the most physically comfortable way for her to live.
Biggest Fear: Alice's biggest fear would probably be never finding a remedy for her condition. She's also deathly afraid of large bodies of water after having drowned.
Powers: Alice lacks any special powers.

Third Person: Alice's eyes opened to a painful prickling on her face. She was lying in a bed, covers pulled up to her chin, protecting the rest of her body from the light in the middle of the room. She made a small frustrated noise and shoved the blankets over her head, peeking out momentarily to examine the room.
Ah, a light-switch! What a merciful find! Draping the largest blanket over herself, she leaped out of the bed and ran to the switch, shutting it off as fast as she could. Giving a relieved sigh, and feeling a touch of annoyance in her chest, she leaned against the wall, pulling the cloth around her shoulders for comfort. She took a quick glance at the window; the shades were pulled, thank goodness.
"Have I died?" she wondered aloud. "No, no, I don't think so. I would have remembered dying. And from what I've been told, the Otherplane would look a fair bit more familiar than wherever this is."
"I guess it's possible someone's performed another ritual on me. A summoning ritual, maybe. But what on earth would the point of that be? In that respect, why would anyone want a Rebirthed? Unless they consider us expendable enough to use in odd experiments."
She shook her head. "But that's all hypothetical. There could be plenty of explanations for what's going on. I'll have to investigate, I guess. The lights are probably turned on outside of here, too... I'll have to stick with this blanket."
A sigh, and she continued talking to herself, as she was wont to do.
"This will be an adventure, I suppose. With any luck, a brand of adventure I'll enjoy."
First Person: [There's some shuffling around as someone tries to figure out how the communicator works.]
Ah, what's this? Is it some kind of telephone? It doesn't quite look like one, but it might be... Can't see what else it could possibly be. Mm...
[And she begins to speak into it directly.] Excuse me, but is this contacting anyone? I've awakened somewhere different than I should be, and it's got me rather concerned. If someone could provide some theories or explanations, I'd like to hear them.
In the meantime, hello, my name is Alice Claret. Assuming there are people around to hear me.
