Running Interference

I once had a friend of mine who tends bar tell me that she always treated me well at the bar because I was good at running interference. Ayup. As an MT, I run into this every once in a while, but as I've gotten older and have more practice with putting my boundaries out there, it's been a while since it's been an issue.

I think a very, very large part of the problem is that, society-wise, women are conditioned from a very young age to cater to men's egos. Not that it's exclusive to men--we're taught to "be nice" and "don't hurt so-and-so's feelings" as all children are; it's just reinforced throughout our lives in a way that it isn't for men. It's why women get passive-aggressive towards one another when there's a conflict between them, for example; we don't have a healthy, constructive way to release anger ( ... )

Upsetting, yes. It's frustrating (but not surprising, sadly!) that this still happens. I'm pleased that you were rewarded with good food, and on behalf of other women, I thank you for noticing it and for offering to stick around. That's one of my favorite things about you.
