This really is a fabulous tutorial. I love your thoughts on cropping especially.

Great tutorial! I just love seeing how other people work. It's very true what you said about things getting uglier before they get better, some of those middle stages are cringe worthy. Thank you for writing this.

That's just marvelous, and omg i can't understand how people manage to make soft-looking icons without using any blurry soft light textures :D i know these are 2 different ways to approach, but i just can't even lol xDD

Is it too bad i don't see the difference between the old vs. new icon? :D I mean i will of course see it if i compare them in PS, but lol why would i :D

lol thanks! This icon is a really big one-off. I usually put like five textures on everything I make.

Well I had the original icon psd but not the original coloring psd, so only the big caps are different! But I'm glad it looks passable!

Those are really interesting thoughts on cropping. I hate cropping with a passion, so I'm always curious and grateful for new ideas :)

I don't like cropping either and this is the only way I could find to make it relatively painless, lol. Mainly painless because if you just keep duplicating your base and resizing/moving your duplicate you never lose something you might have liked if you had looked at it longer. So that is nice.

I like your 'rule' about things having to get ugly before they can get pretty. I work like that as well. :) I thought this was a very interesting read, thank you.
