A little claim that he is a quitting smoker might be a bit of a lie, but it was a useful one. Make a connection with someone, and it eases the fact that you're a stranger, just a little. Familiarity helps the passage of information.
He hasn't gotten much on the way of useful information, yet. But he has made a few of the station members more accepting of him. And that means that he could get that information, if he worked hard enough.
Now, Zechs wasn't someone he quite expected to see today. When he walks over, Heero narrows his eyes at him. It seems that Zechs doesn't remember last night - or at the least, he is pretending not to remember it. Well, he won't be indulged ( ... )

'Heero, I asked where you've been. Not that I haven't accomplished what was necessary, but you know it's standard protocol to inform your mission partner of where you're going to be. I understand if you had something to attend to before I woke up, but you should have contacted me at some point. I've just hunted over the entire station for you.'
There is no reason that he can think of for Heero's behaviour, save the suspicions he hopes are wrong but which are seeming more and more accurate by the moment.
