This is going to sound totally crazy but I wanted to comment on your prisoners dilemma comment. We had a class in Bioengineering that was actually called "games of strategy" (which was awesome by the way) and we dealt a lot with this game. Yes the best strategy is to typically defect with both players not getting the most optimal result but basically covering their a$$. But, there are ways to get the optimal conclusion which is the level of trust in your partner. So there is a way for the people to get the best outcome but it depends on the people.
