The depressing majority veers into a rather deconstructive area with the characterisation. And 5% of good characterisation seem to be in fics who are on an apparently permanent hiatus.

This. As far as I've seen the YGO fandom is definitely the worst in terms of general fanficcing. D:

I don't get why you have to break the characters you like. If you break them, they no longer are the characters you liked in the first place.
It's just as bad in other fandoms too, just that YGO is among the ones with the most fic and, possibly, the one you've been most exposed to.
