Sixth Capsule

[Despite all them pesky "PRIVATE + UNHACKABLE" tags, an out-and-about X has seen enough strangeness and marriage complaints to put two and two together. The final case-cracker for this conclusion was Tear's entry on the subject. HA. CHRIS AND ETHAN, YOU GUYS CAN EAT IT. EAT IT. I WASN'T THE DICK THIS TIME. =D Or rather, I didn't manipulate X ( Read more... )

wow fish!, valentine's day, event, warm fuzzies

[Am I in trouble for putting Tear in "these are lies!" mode? ^^;]

P-p-play along?!

In all honesty, I'm simply under the impression that Memento and Eden like attempting to play match-maker...

[She's just going to keep denying it because she is so freaking confuzzled. Sad thing is she was paired with the correct person.]

[I wouldn't say so. The idea was brought up in chat before now, and the general consensus was, ironically, the same as X's -- the IC suggestion that the event's faking our people is plausible, but there's nothing to prove it one way or the other. They can debate all they want, but they're not finding out until the event's over anyway.]I'm...not suggesting we have to become romantic. Earlier, I told someone else there's no reason why this should affect us outside the memories. The island's only claiming that we married previously; it said nothing about the way we're supposed to act now ( ... )

[Ah. ^^; I was a little worried when you said that, but Tear always tries to be rational, so I felt her trying to deny it was IC. She'll warm up to the idea, though. Poor thing.]

To be honest, I'm not sure how I feel about it. That's the problem.

Any conclusions I may draw are certain to be influenced by these "memories", real or no. So in the end, there's little way of knowing if the feelings are genuine or merely the result of suggestion. If the memories are real, then whatever occurred represents a potential that could be reached again in the future. If they're fake... they're fake.

Aside from instances where the apartments were damaged, I haven't noticed anything that I'd consider "punishment", although there have been cases where people were rewarded for playing along during one event or another. Still, I don't approve of acting the part merely in hopes of being rewarded.

[That's probably a good thing.]

[Being suspicious of a setup like this when you've seen a portion of what M_E likes to do is, in my view, a perfectly justified response. I'm not for thinkin' there's anythin' to worry about here. Meanwhile, this face!]

Mm. Good point. I failed to take the memory effects into consideration. They're...making this tougher than I want to admit.

I suppose the only thing we can do now is find out how to deal with this in ways we can live with. It's easier said than done.

Y-yes, it likely is just the island doing this. That's the only way it makes sense.

[filtered]

... it is, yes. I-I saw it too. Or... I remember it, rather. The same thing as you - it's quite vivid. It's the happiest moment that I've remembered, actually... *poor girl doesn't know what to say, though she's not displeased per se* You looked wonderful. It was all quite beautiful.

B-but you're right. It sounds like what I remember, but considering the situation...

Mmm. We'll know for sure at the end of this, anyway. Valentine's Day's not forever.

[filtered henceforth. shift of expression, too, and he's also at a loss for words]

...It's too bad. Something like this just being part of the island's games...

[-quiet-]

..How are you feeling?

It seems cruel, to play with people like this, doesn't it? Since that's likely all it is.

I-I'm all right, X. And you?

It's possible. Our benefactors have shown they're not above it. Maybe...this is how they celebrate these holidays for themselves? I know it's strange to think of it like that, but the incidents seem to revolve around Earth's celebrations, even though there are people from many different worlds living here. Both religious and secular occasions get the same attention.

If you pick up a mythology book, you'll read some strange stuff, but you won't spend hours on end worrying about Zeus's thunderbolt.

[whoops, X, you're rambling. he catches himself and there's another expressional shift]

I'm...I'm doing okay, Fiona. Thanks. I'm a little confused about all this, but...I'm getting by.

You think these memories aren't real...? [Is one of the few who would be disappointed by this.]

I think the incident's adjacency to Valentine's Day is suspicious. That's all. I've got nothing to prove it one way or the other.

Well, I don't think it's all that suspicious, really... Things like this have happened before. Some months ago, for instance... many of us suddenly gained bizarre powers for a week or so -- and we all regained memories of our real abilities afterward.

I guess, sometimes, our memories are... ah, themed, in a sense.

I've been hearing more stories like that lately. I...guess I haven't really seen what Memento and Eden are capable of.

To be honest, I don't know. That's the issue here. False memories, as far as I know, are unprecedented, and at least one incident with a setup similar to the current one returned actual memories. The idea that these could be legitimate recollections is valid for right now.

Anywhere from a week to ten days is what these seem to go for, but I can't personally assure you of that right now either. All we can do is tough it out and hope for the best.
