The more research I put into ancient swords, metallurgy, and forging techniques, the more I realize that the ancient techniques of pattern welding or the more sophisticated production of true damascus steel didn't produce blades that were superior to modern ones. They were, in fact, the best that ancient smiths could do at the time to produce a ( Read more... )

Ultimately, it would depend on the heart put into the making of the blade. New techniques won't change a swordsmith's love for his craft.

One thing that new technology can do is make it easier for anyone to make swords, and we see that in the mass-produced, cheap, but high-quality ones that are available just about anywhere these days. But there can still be a swordsmith who uses the new technology and fuses it with the spirit of his labor.

Now, whether a knight of old could distingush two such swords is a different debate. No doubt, many would simply attach a mystical stigma to the sword you hypothesize on account of its quality, and such a stigma would only be aided by its wondrous origin (the future).

The skill of the craftsman is certainly important. A good craftsman can make a good sword out of poor materials... but a poor craftsman will likely not make a good sword regardless of the quality of the steel.

However, that good craftsman could make an exceptional sword out of good quality materials. ^_^
