Canon Point: A few weeks after the events of MHX.

Setting:

**NOTE: Maverick Hunter X is a remake of the original Mega Man X game that adds scripting and some much-needed backstory. However, it also creates a few plot holes and rewrites canon a bit. I'd be removing him from a point in the games that doesn't actually change much at all, but I'll be working with the understanding of the rest of the series for terms of how he grows, etc. There's basically no chance in hell for an MHX2, so his canon info should most likely stay right.

The changes involve: Dr. Cain's death, Sigma's facial scars, and Dr. Light's motivations for sealing X away. All-in-all, not a huge deal to the general setting!

Also, Capcom is horrifically bad at keeping all the loose ends of this series together. I've tried to get everything to work, but you have been warned )8***

In the year 20XX (no, it doesn't get any more specific than that), in a world not so different from ours, a brilliant roboticist named Dr. Light set upon making his final creation. There had been countless robot rebellions over the years by his arch-nemesis, Dr. Wily, who abused his genius to sow havoc with his creations... but finally, things drew to a close. This peace was in large part due to his faithful son, Rock, who fought valiantly to put these rogue machines down as the legendary Mega Man.

And quite frankly, because people get old.

So old, in fact, that Light is unable to see his creation enter the world properly. He seals his last robot, X, away for years of morality testing and because the world simply wasn't ready for him.

And so, we fastforward to some April, ~2114. The world is, relative to where we are now, progressing substantially-- cities have huge automatons capable of doing construction and other such tasks. The architecture is smooth and brightly colored.

Most importantly, there's a bunch of robots called 'reploids' about. This is the result of one Dr. Cain, who goes on an archeological dig, only to find the remnants of Dr. Light's lab. He finds X, and begins making replicant androids (reploids); based on X's design, they are capable of forming their own opinions and acting on their own, and eventually come in all shapes and sizes. The MMX universe has giant mechanoloids, robotic octopi, colorful eagle humanoids-- whatever you can think of. Reploids rapidly integrate themselves as a prime force in the world, and live beside humanity in peace for a few years.

But that's not what it is now. A force within the reploids known as the Mavericks ruined whatever peace could have been achieved, murdering innocent humans and weaker reploids, as well as causing widespread property damage. Some of them were exposed to a Maverick Virus, causing them to go delusional and destructive with no cure or vaccine in sight. Others simply chose to become criminals. The game starts in Abel City, where the damage is readily apparent: rogue mechs are rampant, bombings have wrecked the city, and countless civilians are dead.

The one defense is an organization called the Maverick Hunters, who attempt to put down any who would hurt the helpless. But there's only so much they can do when their own forces go Maverick themselves (the most dramatic example being Sigma, the de-facto Maverick leader, who was at one point the extremely influential head of the Hunters), and when the enemy seems so daunting.

This is the world where X begins his journey to make things right. With the rest of the remaining Hunters, he buys the world a small reprieve by killing Sigma and his top leaders. The conflict, however, is doomed to repeat itself over the course of the next hundred years.

Personality:
If you asked the people X works with about what sort of guy he is, you'd eventually settle on a common set of adjectives: kind, sensitive, peaceful, and innocent. At the core, he's young and a pacifist with one of the biggest hearts out there.

So it's a little difficult to believe on that information alone that he's a robot, let alone one created with some very significant battle capabilities. But X exceeds the usual definition of a 'robot;' he has sentience, emotions, and the freedom to make decisions on his own. For all intents and purposes, he's a human with the convenient feature of a hand that turns into a plasma buster. Which sounds like just about the worst idea ever. Why in the world would any scientist in their right mind give a battle machine free will?

Humanity got lucky. His programming basically demands that he worry, constantly, and consider the results of his actions; this is due to extensive morality testing while he was in stasis, and maybe a specific 'suffering circuit' that acts like a moral compass would for organics. Even with the creation of reploids, X is the only one that frets to such a degree. It's what separates him from all other Reploids-- it fuels his ability to constantly evolve, and learn from his actions, as well as his honest desire to bring about good and the ability to empathize.

But a lot of this is technicality. X is a personality. As stated, X is a nice guy, and his least favorite place in the world is very likely in the front lines. Beyond his personal comfort, he puts forth a desire to protect humanity and the dream that reploids and humans can someday live in peace, together. He's learned that fighting against those that would harm innocents and taking care of people who can't defend themselves is better than stubbornly holding onto pacifism.

Yet even on the battlefield, X can't always hide behind this determination. His hesitation to pull the trigger is obvious enough that he's only a B-Class Hunter despite his abilities. He shows compassion to his enemies and since most of them are actually old comrades gone crazy, it causes him a considerable deal of emotional strife to fight them. When times call for him, he always comes through by reminding himself of the greater good and realizing that the Maverick Virus is the real enemy, but he is never desensitized by the deaths as many other Hunters allow themselves to be. In this aspect he is constantly growing, learning to put aside his doubts, but not to stop questioning or be complacent.

Not that he's not without his faults. 'Innocence' and hope for the good in everyone unfortunately comes with the tagline of being overly-trusting/easily used (and this only really fixes itself after three or four major betrayals in the series). And with his worrying being a source of his potential, it also leads to him doubt his own abilities and blame himself. Furthermore, even X can be angered and scorned to the point of rage-- case in point, Sigma. So despite his overall patience, he can also be intensely emotional when the people he cares about are involved. More subtly, it would seem that he also hasn't quite learned how good and bad aren't entirely black and white, and the lessons that teach him otherwise are greatly troubling.

However, Zero comments that while X is certainly innocent, he eventually grows beyond the point that he's not naive; he learns the flaws of his own ideals, to accept and absorb other points of view, and that blindly fighting for 'justice' is an easily-corrupted stigma. He's also not as wishy-washy as his suffering circuit sounds like it would make him-- he's still something akin to military, and if he has a job to do he'll pull through. Just not without his own reservations and a hefty load of guilt later.

On a more social level, X is polite and nice, if not rather stern as he takes on more responsibility. Even with his love for peace, his programming dooms him to never really be at peace himself; he doesn't smile a whole lot, and he tends to consistently worry and put work first. Oftentimes he'll get lost in his own thoughts. Still, he's inquisitive and likes to learn about his company. He's sincere and modest, giving genuine thanks and apologies where they're due. And he's quick to be on good terms with other people, to whom it's clear that he's a good person who cares for just about everyone. They'll most likely never hear his own internal conflict and questioning-- and he never expects them to. Taking a more meta perspective on X's behavior, X sees huge casualties, fights for what might be more than a hundred years, builds a city, etc, before he takes a significant rest. When he eventually gets jaded, he still sacrifices his own interests to save people; his wishes for coexistence never, ever fade. Hiccups in resolve (X7) or not, he really does have the drive to make the world a better place.

Abilities, Weaknesses, and Power Limitation Suggestions:
- While it's difficult to define as an ability, it's been repeatedly said over the course of the series that X's potential is 'limitless.' Not bound by practically any physical limitations, nor the 'mental' or emotional limits of other robots or Reploids, X grows stronger in both regards over time. Zero, who most would consider nigh-invincible, stands by the belief that X is the superior hunter, and the antagonists of the series tend to treat X as their greatest threat in the scope of their universe. On a basic level, it means he has an eye for in-battle tactics and even if he starts out as the underdog, he learns very, very quickly.

- As contrary as it seems with his personality, X is a combat model: his senses and reaction times far exceed a normal human's (e.g. vision is superior by many magnitudes, hearing extends into ultrasonic waves, better voice recognition, etc.). Physically, the games have yet to reveal an upper limit as to how much brute strength he has; to view it in terms of just lifting weight, it's probably in the neighborhood of several hundred pounds with full concentration. And opposed to giant battle mechs, X's focus seems more along accuracy and mobility. He has an auto-balancing system that helps him always land on his feet (barring being thrown into the ground and whatnot) and can easily jump several stories/fall great distances with walls to scale (wall-jumping is a game staple), as well as an emergency acceleration system for sudden bursts of speed.

- At roughly 5'7" and 125 pounds, it's clear technology in his universe has made some progress. His outer shell is a lightweight titanium alloy, while his internal armor and skeleton absorb a great deal of physical harm (canon says 93%, but not what that's relative to).

- X prefers storing solar energy, which is converted to power his weapons systems and general function. However, he can also consume/store alternate resources such as fuel-- this allows him to function for extended times underground, underwater, etc. High temperature and altitude also seem to have no effect on his performance.

- Just like his brothers before him, his right hand can morph from hand to buster freely. From this he can channel energy to fire plasma shots, which vary exponentially in strength with how long he charges up (from rather small bursts to devastatingly powerful blasts, though more power obviously requires more undisturbed prep time). Perhaps the most lucrative aspect of Light's legacy however is his variable weapon system-- X can basically steal enemy robots' properties after he defeats them, though using these abilities strain his resources quite a bit more. Switching between weapon modes is extremely natural for him, but many lasting effects require sticking in the same mode.

As of right now, he has eight separate buster modes besides the default, and each has a 'charged' state. Naturally, for him to charge a special weapon it takes time, concentration, and a rather taxing amount of energy.

1. Shotgun Ice - shoots large chunks of ice, and can reduce enemy mobility by freezing them ; (charged) fires out a penguin-shaped sled made of ice yes it sounds stupid okay shut up
2. Electric Spark - a scattering electric shock that's tough to trace ; (charged) emits a huge pulse of electricity out around him.
3. Rolling Shield - a large ball of energy that rolls along the ground ; (charged) creates an energy shield around X.
4. Homing Torpedo - self explanatory. They're pretty slow, but work just as well underwater. (charged) bigger, better torpedoes?
5. Boomerang Cutter - shoots out a boomerang that can be painfully sharp, or just a normal one to retrieve and move objects ; (charged) shoots out several large blades of energy that fan out.
6. Chameleon Sting - I'm going to say this one's broken on arrival because it deals with invulnerability/doesn't make much sense.
7. Storm Tornado - a twister that shoots out horizontally ; (charged) a huge version of the normal shot, but it focuses on doing damage vertically.
8. Fire Wave - a flamethrower ; (charged) a wave of fire that ripples forward.

If this is too much, I'd suggest cutting down to 1, 3, 4, and 7. Their big limiting factor is that they drain energy like a bitch. I'd like him to be able to gain new chips as a CR tool, but none of his weapons even when fully charged are or ever will be 'DESTROY THE SHIP' level.

Known Weaknesses:
- A combat model, X isn't fantastic at data analysis or anything of that sort. He doesn't even understand his own body, and is perfectly happy leaving all that stuff to people who know what they're doing.

- Compared to a lot of the mechs in his series, X actually can't take too many punches. A beam saber through the power supply and being crushed by a bigger robot won't kill him outright, but it'll put him out of commission for sure.

- X hesitates. A lot. He's gotten better about it recently, but when friends or civilians are in the line of fire he will avoid getting them hurt at all costs-- hostage situations are all-out nightmare fuel for him. Other signs of his relative inexperience include the fact that he's pretty susceptible to traps and will rush into a situation without fully understanding what's going on. He's also willing to trust basically everyone for no damn reason.

- Spikes

Inventory: Nothing really. He'll have his 'normal' armor without any of the major upgrades sans a buster enhancement he got from Zero. For sentimental value.
Appearance: Humanoid. The games are extremely ambiguous and conflicting about what's under that armor; 'civvie' reploids wear armor as skirts and other such casual clothing, and they sleep in it. Early concept art shows him as being entirely mechanical without skin or hair, while the more recent Zero series would imply their hair is real. X has never been shown out of armor. I'm going to assume something a happy medium this, where it's human-inspired but obviously robotic. I'm also going to assume he's a brunette like his 'brother' Rock.
Age: Unknown, but he doesn't physically age-- looks mid-late teens. Mentally, he's stated to be about 15 and I'd wager the events of the first game put him a little older.

If AU, How is Your Version Different From Canon, and How Will That Come Across?
If OC, Did You Run Your Character Through a Mary-Sue Litmus Test?
And What Did You Score?

Log Sample:

X had won his battle. But something about it, for lack of a better word, was... hollow. Because it had never been about defeating his enemies. There were better ways-- there were always other ways. Diplomacy, peaceful solutions. "Have I not destroyed my enemy when I have made him into my friend?"

But other ways took time. The prototype reploid looked out over his broken Abel City with a marked grimness years too old for how young he looked. Armor dented and discolored from battle, X brought a hand to a particularly nasty wound on his shoulder with absent awareness. He'd learned the hard way that there wasn't time to spare on some of these lunatics. That they were willing to cause death and destruction for no good reason. He knew that hesitating meant someone was going to get hurt.

It didn't make his job any easier.

When the teleporter picks up his signal, X finds himself at 'home', or the closest equivalent thereof. Maverick Hunter HQ. When he defeated Sigma, the Hunters didn't have time for a proper celebration. If anything, there was so little time for mourning (and so very many casualties), that it seemed even more depressing now that the conflict was dying down. But the little things kept him going: the grateful grabs at his shoulder for a reassuring shake, the soldiers that trusted him as their new leader (as terrifying as the responsibility was), the occasional sight of a group laughing together like life before the Mavericks. Small victories. X found himself giving up a small smile.

There was always hope.

[ The speaker is a young man, looking into the recorder with a tight-lipped expression. The perceptive (or those who are good at spotting synthetics) might notice his skin is just a touch too smooth, his eyes a little too uniform. He doesn't have any issues working the device, but is quiet for a few moments before speaking, a troubled expression on his face. A second later he shakes it off, and continues. ]

Has anyone heard of the Maverick Hunters? [ pause ] I guess the question I should be asking first is whether or not there are any reploids out there. Any information at all would be appreciated. Thank you.

[ He moves to turn off the device, but lingers for a second. ] The AI called this place Sacrosanct. It seems... calm. So far, anyway. [ His voice, having grown soft, gains a sharp note of resolve ] But I need to reach HQ, ASAP.
