When Sheva first met him, she couldn't help but be attracted to him. Speaking superficially, he was tall, attractive, and she'd always been quite attracted to buff men. But it was more than that. He had a fierce determination in his eyes that told Sheva he was fighting a personal battle, unlike so many she had met who were in it simply - granted, selflessly - to try to make the world a peaceful place again. But it was deeper for him, and she could identify with that. She had lost her family to this war - she wondered what it was he had lost.

And even after only a few hours, she felt drawn to him, found his dry, sarcastic humor matched well with her own sense of humor; that they worked together perfectly as a team, with him always watching her back and she able to read his actions and work with them to get the most done in the least amount of time. They fit, she thought, and it just felt right. It never occurred to her that he would be good at what he did because he'd done it all before, but with someone else.

Until he mentioned her, and it was his eyes again that told her more than he was letting on. "We were partners," he said, and she believed him, but she could hear the double entendre in his words, even if he hadn't intended to let it show. Partner. She wasn't sure if the word made her feel suddenly guilty for feeling attracted to a man who was obviously with someone else, or if she was jealous for not being said woman.

She tried to push the idea on him that she was his partner now, putting emphasis on the word and giving him meaningful looks, but it was obvious he either didn't catch on, or he didn't want to agree with her. Yes, they were partners, but only because they were working together and nothing more. Sheva decided to follow the train of thought that Jill was probably dead, finding that the thought, though mean, comforted her to an extent. All they had to find was evidence that Jill wasn't alive, and Sheva would have her way.

Sheva was surprised, to say the least, at how easy it was to pretend she didn't hear Chris' warning - "Don't hurt her!" - or how easy it was to pretend it was an accident when the older woman's body lay sprawled on the ground, unmoving, obviously not breathing. It was as though she'd shut off a part of herself, the part that made her feel horrible for merely thinking evil thoughts on the innocent, but part of her just couldn't care.

"I swear, Chris, it was an accident! I just tried to knock her out, but she twisted and jerked and-" But she never apologized because she wasn't sorry that Jill, Chris' partner, was dead, though she supposed she felt a little guilty when he believed her, his eyes sad but unaccusing.

"Chris, it was-"

"An accident. I know.
