Ok, so I was all set to write a term paper on how Vancouver B.C. plays itself in so many movies while simultaneously subbing for just about everywhere in the continental U.S. As examples, I was going to use Juno and Saved, two sweet, smart little indy flicks both set in U.S. towns over 1500 miles away, and both featuring lots of driving around the ( Read more... )

Did you never watch "The Journey of Natty Gan" as a child? The girl rides the rails across Depression-era North America with an actual wolf.

Okay, you know what? Juno and Saved! are two of my most favouritist girl-coming-of-age movies of all time.

Another one? Okay, it's not so much of coming-of-age as it is coming-into-yourself, but...

I agree with you on how scary that is. So did Susie Bright, and if I can ever find that link again, I'll send it to you.

I often find movies about San Francisco are interesting because most of them are shot in BC, but NY sounds great, and Frida and Across the Universe are so lush... Julie Taymor is definitely one of those directors who started honing her craft on the stage, and then made art direction one of the primary focusses in her film project.
