Sam knew the moment they walked into the dinner that Dean hadn’t told him everything. Like the fact that Lindsey was Dean’s ex.

Dean stared across the table at Lindsey and the dark haired man beside him. He’d always known Lindsey had good taste. Lindsey had chosen him after all. Still in spite of moving on it was a little hard to see his ex holding hands with some one else. Not that Dean was one for holding hands in public. Lindsey hadn’t been either and Dean had to wonder what was going on. Dean sighed. Somebody had to say something.

“So what’s going on?” Dean asked.

“I never told you much about my life before the hunt. I think I have to start there.” Lindsey paused and Sam noted that he seemed to grip the other man’s hand harder. “I used to be a lawyer. An evil lawyer.”

Slowly Lindsey began to explain his childhood and how Wolfram & Heart had recruited him. He talked about slowly crossing the line and finding his way back. He talked about a different kind of demon than anything Sam and Dean had ever hunted. He explained about Angel, the vampire with a soul.

Doyle had remained quiet until this point. He began adding bits and pieces to Lindsey’s explanation. He explained simply about his visions. His soft Irish lilt was a surprise to the Winchesters. Lindsey explained about Angel’s curse, and how his evil past made it impossible for Angel to be perfectly happy with him ever.

Sam wished they had dad’s journal. They should have been taking notes. He tried not to think about what Lindsey had done to Dean. Sam figured he had to be the hunter Dean had worked with for two years while Sam was at Stanford. The hunter Dean wouldn’t talk about.

Lindsey began explaining Angel’s slow decent into darkness culminating in leaving a group of Wolfram & Hart lawyers to die. He talked about how he had tried to get through to Angel but nothing had worked. Then the powers had stepped in. Doyle looked even paler if that was possible. Lindsey’s next words were a shock to Sam and Dean.

“I skipped one thing earlier. Doyle died saving some innocent Listers demons. Over a year ago. The powers brought him back hopefully to save Angel.” Lindsey took a deep breath and paused.

Sam and Dean stared.

“Bein’ brought back isn’t all it’s cracked up ta be.” Doyle spoke up. There wasn’t anything to say to that. “Didna do much a good anyway.” Doyle didn’t say anything else.

“Apparently Angel had been interested in Doyle but had never done anything on account of the curse. Far as we can tell he figured the guilt over Doyle’s death would prevent perfect happiness. Angel broke up with me to pursue Doyle.” Lindsey took a deep breath. “Of course it wasn’t like my old law firm was happy to let me go. When Angel dumped me he stopped protecting me from the revenge attempts of my old law firm. A combination of luck and some help from Angels employees kept me safe. Finally the old law firm sent Lilah out to offer Angel a deal in exchange for me. I have no idea what the deal was because...” Lindsey stopped.

Doyle’s voice cut into the silence. “She mighta been evil but Lindsey’d worked with her. An’ she was human. Angel just snapped her neck an’ told Lindsey ta ‘clean it up’.”

Dean looked right at Lindsey. “I’m sorry.” He wasn’t going to apologize for the things he’d said when they’d broken up but he could leave the whole thing squarely in the past. He was sorry for the hell Lindsey had been through, was in.

Lindsey nodded and that was that. “Doyle’s death was never reported so he still had access to some old accounts. I’ve been hiding out in an apartment he’s been paying for but we need to get ourselves some where else. I’m thinking Maine. It’s a long way from here and it has a lot of woods. If we can track down an old Crow medicine man, Old Like Stones, from Montana we should be able to get some tattoos that will makes us unfindable, at least by magic”.

“It’s a last resort. We won’t be using magic. It could make us findable so mostly no hunting things. At the moment being alive together is the best we can hope for.” Lindsey sounded resigned.

“We just gotta deal with Angel. Even if we came up with a plan for the two of us I don’t think we could do. Too much history.” Doyle looked at the brothers.

“Will you help? I’m asking man.” Lindsey wasn’t begging not even close, but he was asking. Dean knew him, knew what that took. What could he say? Of course they’d help.

“Yes.” Sam’s voice startled everyone one. He could argue with Dean later these people needed help and the vampire named Angel had to be stopped.
