FANDOM: [ My Little Pony; Friendship is Magic ]
CANON: [ Post-Episode 22, which is the most recent episode. ]
WHAT THEY LOST: [ Applejack will lose her cutie mark, which are the three red apples on her flank as shown
here. This is a significant loss due to what cutie marks represent in MLP; FIM canon; they appear when a pony has realized their special talent. It's an important symbol of what makes them unique, as well as what their career will be when they grow up. However, this isn't something that will change Applejack's characterization. ]
ABOUT THE CHARACTER: [ To start, Applejack definitely doesn't fit the typical "girly" character mold; she's tough, dependable, independent and confident and unafraid to get dirty if it means getting the job done. Being raised on a farm and put in charge of managing her family's apple orchard- with little help, given the scattered nature of her relatives -has taught Applejack the values of hard work and discipline. The lifelong experience also taught her to be fiercely protective of what she has, be it family, friends or farmland; you really couldn't ask for a more capable or dutiful person. She tries to be the level head in all situations and easily falls into positions of leadership, trying to watch out for those in her care. Although she often has her plate full at any given moment due to the aforementioned responsibilities, Applejack easily manages to stay a cheerful and charitable soul- she's more than willing to help anyone with their problems if it's within her ability to do so. Nor is she only about drudgery and chores; Applejack likes to play just as much as anyone her age.
She's friendly, although not quite to a fault, and concerns herself with practical matters in part so that others can get what they really need instead of intangible daydreams. Each of the main characters are, in a sense, the physical representations of one of the Elements of Harmony; Applejack is "Honesty". The twist here is that this doesn't mean she never lies or prevaricates- because she's definitely done both now and then -but rather that she's the most open, even to the point of bluntness, straightforward in her thoughts and feelings. What she means, she says; what she says, she means. If you could count on anyone to tell the hard truth, it'd be Applejack. She's the least likely out of all the main characters to cheat or slack off, and she's pretty much the go-to girl when you need a tough but fair taskmaster.
But with virtue comes, if not vice, then failings. Applejack, while not exactly thin-skinned, has some very real sore spots; she hates being belittled on account of her rural upbringing or her tomboyish ways. (She knows she's not as fashionable or cultured as some others one could name, thank you kindly.) Don't call her debased or stupid or anything like that if you don't want a fight. Applejack's stubborn as a mule and sometimes just as ornery. She's easily the most bad-tempered out of all the main characters, the one most prone to snapping at others when her patience breaks and the one to whom apologies and admittance of fault come with great difficulty. Her (not always misplaced) pride often feeds into the competitive part of her nature, and it's not hard to goad the applebucker into letting her ego get the better of her if you push the right buttons. Oh, and when I mentioned how helpful she was? She can take that to the extreme; Applejack is the type to push herself farther beyond her limits than is healthy, to the point where she forsakes sleep and rest for days in order to keep working.
While Applejack likes to help others, it's generally not very easy for her to accept assistance in return. It's important to her that she's thought of as someone to rely on, that her strength and presence is acknowledged and respected. Before learning her lesson from Twilight, she used to become pretty defensive when others wouldn't accept her claims that she was fine, she didn't need help, she could do it all on her own. Her down to earth, "common sense" way of thinking can make her borderline dense in regards to others, especially when they're trying to hide how they really feel. They say they're fine, and fake that they're fine, so Applejack takes them at their word- although it's not so much gullibility as it is Applejack being too trusting. ]
THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: [ Applejack's not used to anything so fancy as a "dining hall"; the worn and weathered kitchen table had always been good enough for her. But she's never been known for standing on ceremony- or for being very good at it when she did -so after a quick glance from side to side to make sure no one was judging watching, she tugs over a bowl of fruit.
...only to find that it's full of apples. Green, red, yellow, full and ripe, probably just as nutritious as the ones grown on the family orchard back in Equestria. She sighs, appetite fading away fast to make room for an almost crushing wave of homesickness. Yet the hunger remains, a sharp gnawing burn- for this isn't the first time food has lost all appeal since her arrival. So Applejack starts to eat regardless, out of necessity if not pleasure. How could she face her friends in Ponyville otherwise?
Already thinking of home, she glances out of the corner of her eye to observe the latter half of her pony body for a moment- even though she already knows what she'll see. It'd be a lie to say, whether aloud or to herself, that seeing the blank flank where her cutie mark used to be didn't add to the loneliness of being here, didn't cause a pang of unhappiness in her heart. Those three red apples emblazoned on her hind represented her special talent, something that she alone was truly best at, and furthermore solidified her place in the Apple family and business. She had lost a part of herself, both literally and metaphorically.
But there wasn't anything to be done about it. Or at least, not yet. But when the time came (as, with another crunching mouthful of apple, she assured herself it would) Applejack would be ready. She'd leap into action- any action, anything -and somehow, someway get back to where she belonged.]
FIRST-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: [ [An impatient snuffling nose, followed by the brief stamping of hooves. She's not in a good mood about all this malarkey kidnapping nonsense.]
So I've heard the lowdown on this showdown and I gotta tell y'all the honest truth- I ain't impressed. But since I'm gonna be stuck here for heaven knows how long, might as well introduce myself, since my ma raised me to be polite even in confoundin' situations like these. I'm Applejack, an' I hope we can git along.
[the last is said almost angrily, but then there's a pause and Applejack sighs, continuing in a somewhat calmer tone.] If y'like, I can teach y'all how to fix up some real good eats. I know this place feeds everypony- er, everyone jest fine, but there ain't no shame in learnin' a new skill, right? I can show y'all how to make apple pies, apple fritters, apple tarts, apple turnovers, apple cobbler... ]
INTENT: [ Applejack is my favorite out of all the ponies and her character type is one I haven't toyed with as much as some others, so I'm interested in trying her out. Ideally, I'd like for her to get over various insecurities and learn to make non-pony friends in Paradisa, as well as somehow find a place of sorts in the strange new world. Or join some kind of resistance movement, that'd be fun too. ]

Abilities: Applejack's a strong character, both emotionally and physically; thank the lifetime of working hard on a farm. She's pretty fast as well, able to stay neck and neck with Rainbow Dash during a race. She's an expert at all kinds of farmhand chores like using a lasso and herding animals, and can make a crazy number of things out of apples. She has an extensive knowledge of farming, though, so she isn't just limited to apple trees.
