Plus, there's a very special surprise. And cobbler. :D
Lily pointed her wand to the two candles in the middle of the set table. She nervously looked at the clock, waiting for the hand with James's name to turn from "Traveling" to "Home". Well. She could do without that slight change of hand as well. Because, well, she wasn't exactly...sure of what he would say. What he would think.
And then there was Harry and Remus and Sirius and. Oh Merlin.
She moved about the kitchen restlessly.
James apparated to the front stoop with a muffled CRACK, and swung open the front door, cheerfully. "Honey, I'm home!" he called out with a huge smile, gathering Lily into a tight hug and a quick kiss.
Within a moment, the hand on the wizard's clock had turned to 'Home' and James had appeared and gathered her in his arms. It was almost too quick.
"Have you never heard of knocking, James Potter?" Lily glowered at him. Then she shook her head. Act normal. "How was your day?"
James shrugged. "It's my house, I'm not supposed to have to knock!" He took off his light jacket and threw it in the direction of a coat rack, which reached out and caught the jacket, hanging it up properly for him. "It was good. Pretty routine. Lots of sodding paperwork." He stole a breadstick off the counter and shoved half of it in his mouth. "You?" he asked, mouth full.
"If you ruin your appetite before dinner, James Potter, I am eating that cobbler all by myself," Lily said, teasing him a little. "Oh me? Nothing. Er. The usual, I mean. Cooking. Cleaning. Baking. Owling. Shopping." She bit her tongue as she began to babble.
James grinned and nearly bounced up and down. "There's cobbler!? You're brilliant, you know that, right?" He kissed her again on the cheek as she babbled. "Anything you need help with before dinner, love?"
"No, of course not. I've got everything under control," she replied sternly, managing to calm herself a bit. "You go upstairs and change. Dinner's ready."
"All right!" James hopped up the stairs two at a time to change into jeans and a worn-in t-shirt.
Lily walked around the table slowly, eyes mesmerized by the two flames in the middle of the table. She felt a little queasy, but it was all right. She sat down at the table when her head started spinning a little.
James tromped back down the stairs and slid into his own seat. "This looks great! And candles! How romantic." James flashed Lily a charming smile and reached across the table to rest his hand on hers.
Lily coughed and slid her hand away from his, getting up to serve the food. "Moody hasn't sent me an owl in a while. Been behaving lately?" She grinned at him.
James laughed, settling comfortably back in his chair. "I always behave."
"Is that so? Then you can't possibly be the same James Potter I married," Lily said, making a face at him as she filled both plates up with food."
James put on his best innocent face. "But I've always been a perfect angel!"
"If angel is synonymous with devil, then sure," Lily laughed, settling down to her own seat.
James juvinilely stuck his tongue out at Lily as he reached for the parmesan cheese to sprinkle on his spaghetti. "This looks fantastic, by the way."
"Are you saying that every single one of my dinners do not look fantastic?" Lily mock-glared at him. She hmphed a little as she took a small bite of her breadstick.
James smirked. "Well, there was the tuna casserole..."
Lily brandished her breadstick at him as if it was a wand. "I thought I told you never to mention that again under threat of feeding you another similar dish."
James held up his hands and mimed zipping his mouth shut, unzipping it after a moment to take a large bite of pasta.
Lily thought of throwing her breadstick at him for a moment, but then decided the next moment that she was too ravenous to do so. So instead, she took a large bite of it and made a face across the table at her husband.
James smiled, shoving another large bite in his mouth. "This is nice," he said, after swallowing.
Lily took her fork, twisting a few strands of spaghetti around it. She brought it to her mouth, but couldn't eat. Her stomach was twisted with nerves. "It....is. It's....peaceful."
James nodded, watching Lily and finally noticing her discomfort. "You all right?"
Lily choked as she was about to drink her glass of pumpkin juice. "O-of course I'm all right. There's nothing to not be all right about. I'm perfectly and completely fine, James."
James frowned. Something wasn't right. The lady doth protest too much. "You sure?"
Lily wrapped a lot of spaghetti around her fork and stuffed it into her mouth. "Of courf I'm fure, Potter. Honeftly."
"...Seriously. What's wrong?"
Lily swallowed and glared at him. "Do you not listen to anything I say?"
James glared back. "Everything, love. But I can tell when you're lying."
"Nothing's wrong, James. Finish your dinner," she huffed, taking another large sip of her pumpkin juice. And it was true. Nothing was......wrong. Technically. Really. Sort......of?
"Yes, ma'am." James pouted, but nodded and concentrated on twirling the spaghetti around his fork.
Lily waited nervously as James finished his dinner, not being able to eat more than a few bites herself. Was it really this hard last time? .....anyways. Cobbler. Right. The cobbler would help. She would tell him over cobbler. ....maybe.
James took a big piece of cobbler and took a nice big bite, cewing thoughtfully. he swallowed and glanced back up at Lily. "So?" he asked, wiping his mouth with a napkin.
Lily coughed and took a piece of cobbler for herself. She really shouldn't put it off any longer. Well. She really.....couldn't. Not when James knew she had something to tell. "James--" she began, but her voice croaked. Clearing it slightly, she tried again. "James...........Harry is all........grown up."
James nodded carefully. "Yes...I've noticed."
Lily glared at him, as if it was his fault that she was acting like a hormonal teenager, waiting to tell her crush that she liked him. "What I meant is, he's completely grown and we're...barely in our 20s. We didn't even get to see our son grow up."
James frowned sadly and nodded again, slowly. "I know," he said softly.
"What if......we........had that chance.......again?" Lily said slowly, not looking up at him.
James stared at Lily, finally getting an inkling at what she was trying to say, but not sure enough to let himself react yet. He cleared his throat carefully. "Lily...what are you trying to tell me?"
"James," Lily said, finally looking up to meet his eyes. A blush spread across her cheeks. "I'm-- We-- Er. That is. You and I---- Er. We're.....going to have a baby."
James took a moment to process what Lily had said. His mouth hung open for a moment and his eyes widened. "You're pregnant?" A huge, goofy grin spread accross his face. "You're pregnant!!!!" he jumped up and sprinted over to the other side of the table, where he gathered Lily into a tight hug. "A new baby! Lily! You're pregnant!!!"
Lily blinked, unable to react fast enough to James's reaction. Within a moment he was jumping up and sprinting over. She barely had time to catch her breath before she was pulled up in James's euphoria. "James--ack--you're--choking--me," she managed to squeeze out while simultaneously relaxing and laughing as well.
James loosened his hold, still jumping around like a maniac. "Sorry! I just got excited! Lily! We can give the new baby Harry's old room, and we'll actually get to watch him or her grow up and oh Merlin I can't wait to see the look on Sirius' face when we tell him!!!!" He lifted Lily off the ground and spun her around before setting her down gently and kissing her sofly, his hand lifting to rest on her stomach. "Lily. I love you."
Lily giggled as James spun her around, her eyes lighting up with the same prospects he had just named. "And don't forget Harry. He's going to have a sibling. We'll have to tell him first of all," she smiled, kissing him back. "I love you too. Apparently."
James bounced a little more. "Yes! Harry! Can we tell him RIGHT NOW??? Where is he???"
"How am I supposed to know where our 18 year old son is? As if that kid owls me at all," Lily scowled while laughing. "This one's not going to get off so easily. I'll make sure he or she keeps in touch when we're old and rotting away."
James stopped bouncing and smiled at Lily, kissing her again, softly. "A baby, Lily."
Lily shifted her arms, wrapping them around James's neck. "Another baby, James. One we can raise together."
James lifted a hand to cup Lily's cheek softly. "I'm so excited. I really do love you so so much, Lily."
"I wasn't so keen at first, but I've learned better," she smiled. Lily leaned forward, giving James a deep kiss.
James sighed into her kiss, tangling his fingers in her hair. "Let's put the cobbler away and go to bed, eh, love?"
"That sounds nice," Lily said, smiling sleepily. "You can be my pillow."
She picked up her wand and waved the cobbler away while setting the dishes to wash and dry.
Then, intertwining her hand with James's, she pulled him out of the kitchen and up the stairs to their room.
