The All-American Rejects at The Social - Orlando, FL 11/6/08

Nov 16, 2008 21:53

If you've seen any of my previous recaps from shows at The Social, you know the place is tiiiiiiny. During the show, Tyson said that they hadn't played a venue this small in over four years. And we were the first show on the tour, so they were very pumped. \o/

Meet & Greet
Despite Artist Arena's epic failure to give us any kind of details about the Meet & Greet time until an hour and a half before it was to begin, we made it and everything worked out. eleanor_lavish, canadiankracka and I had Meet & Greet, which was apparently proportionally tiny to the venue size, because there were SIX PEOPLE and we were HALF of them.

The boys were at the tiniest table ever and were so wonderful, ugh. Tyson stood up at the end a few minutes in and was having conversations with everyone so there was a pile up of the things to sign. Nick tried to get his attention: "Tyson. Tyson. Tyson? Tyson. Tyson. TysonTysonTyson. Tyson?", etc in his I've Clearly Done This A Million Times Before voice. UGH LOVE. Also, I love canadiankracka so much because things like this happen whens she's around:

Tyson: What's your name, girl?
Lex: *blinks* Lex.
Tyson: L-E-X?
Lex: You're good at spelling.

Tyson kind of blinked back at her and Nick started to laugh. ♥ I had them sign my Move Along liner notes and I love it lots. We got pics with them; f-list, you'll get to see those.

They sent all six of us back outside, but to the front of the line. Once back inside, we reunited with R and went to my favorite spot at The Social: the raised railing along back-center of the pit. Which honestly, is closer and FAR more comfortable than you get in a pit at most shows in normal-sized venues. So \o/.

Openers
The first band... I honestly can't remember much about them. Including their name (I had to ask canadiankracka just now as I was writing this up). The City Lives! Bands shouldn't have names that can be pronounced (and thus interpreted) in multiple ways. See also: The ONEders/Wonders. They were okay, but kind of forgettable?

Then was Jet Lag Gemini. Before they came on, El and I were admiring this adorable boy in glasses and a vest that kept wandering around on his cell phone. He turned out to be their Michael Cera-esque bassist. And there was a hipster guitarist and a flaily singer. They were fun and quirky and... idek. El wiki-ed them on her phone because we were intrigued. They are Russian by way of New Jersey. Which somehow makes so much sense. Also, the hipster guitarist and the MichaelCera bassist are brothers. \o/

Michael Cera-esque bassist.

Flaily singer walking on the crowd (after realizing it was a bad idea to jump on them with his mic cord wrapped around his neck 3 times).

The singer talked to us a bit after and R and I co-bought their CD from him. Speaking of, I need to upload that for you, bb. I'm on it soon!

The All-American Rejects
Before the Rejects went on, a few things happened. One, I had the fanciest camera, so I took a pic of Chris's setlist. At the time we could read it perfectly. But looking back now, we can't remember which song they played first since we were all a-flail and in the pic to me it looks like it says 'Bad Homo'. WTF, what does it saaaaaay? (Pic made huge on purpose for reading purposes!)

And THEN. I noticed that on the equipment on Nick's side there was a pink iDog. If you are unfamiliar, and iDog can be plugged into your iPod/computer(/soundboard, apparently) and once it gets to know the kind of music you like to play, it will light up and wiggle its ears and head along to the beat. eleanor_lavish made the accurate observation that part of the reason she loves this band so much is that she's really not sure which one of them thought this was more awesome. REJECTS = ♥

So they came out and were awesome and amazing and I don't even know what to say. This was my first AAR show and I didn't ever expect to see them in anything smaller than an arena, so this was unbelievably amazing. Things I remember, in no real order:

-Tyson said this was their first show in a place this size in FOUR YEARS.

-TOOOOAD.

-Tyson turned and danced seductively for Chris. Chris reached out and poked him in the crotch with a drumstick.

-The iDog was going insane, so clearly it is hooked up to their soundboard ALL THE TIME. Nick looked back at it and smiled a few times.

-Chris seemed SO HAPPY. Usually he's up on a riser so far away from everyone else, he seemed very content to be that close. UGH GAYLOR.

-The first row of the pit is literally very likely to be kneed in the head by the people on stage. Tyson chose to use this closeness to his advantage by stealing half-finished pink fruity drinks from the crowd. Girls in the front were waving them around so two or three times Ty just took them out of their hands and walked around with them a bit before finishing them off, much to Nick's horror and amusement.

-The stage is so small and there is no actual 'backstage' so instead of climbing over things to leave the stage before the encore, they just... sat down. Right down on the stage, except Chris, who stayed behind his kit. Nick drank a million gallons of water and grinned at everyone ever. Tyson had a sort of glazed-over SO TIRED BUT I LOVE IT look. Chris toweled off his entire body. Mike play-fought and chatted with Toad, who was squatting on his knees beside him. Eventually, Tyson started to climb up his mic stand, by the power of the crowd's screams. I took video of it ALL! (see later in this post.)

Pictures!
Not all of my pics, but the best ones!

Video!
I highly recommend going to the YouTube page for each one of these and clicking to watch them in high quality. It's worth it; my camera is pretty amazing for a point-n-shoot. \o/
