original fic: soft hands, soft hands

Probably final draft of my original late-1940s baseball story. Ten points to you if you can guess what team they're supposed to be on, and extra bonus points on two of the named guys--they're both Hall of Famers. The narrator and main character are, of course, entirely fictional.

Soft Hands, Soft Hands
1900 words, PG?

It's 1948. )

I'm going with the '48 Red Sox, and Joe Dimaggio and Jackie Robinson as the Hall of Famers. That took way tooooo long.

Also: There's a world of difference between your best left-handed started acting like a flake, and your rookie shortstop who's taking at-bats away from a vet. - Left-handed starter?

I really like this. I find Rube a very fascinating character. Like seeing him from the unnamed narrator's POV.

Oh, haha, I just saw your LJ cut. If I'd checked before I started pouring over retrosheet, I would have saved myself at least an hour of obsessively checking that site. :P

Hmm, I should've been more clear. I meant renamed-by-me guys, which is to say Boddy the left fielder and Campetti the second baseman, who are of course Ted Williams and Bobby Doerr. But yes, '48 Red Sox.

And tell me why I'm up at six AM looking at Detroit on google maps instead of doing homework?

Oh, and thank you very much for the typo catch! R and D are very close to each other, and I make that mistake all the time.

Ohh, yeah, that makes sense. DiMaggio and Robinson would kind of have been cheating anyway. \o/

I'm not sure. Why? Do your homework instead!

You're welcome! I've got eagle eyes when it comes to typos. Unless it's my own.

The Michigan left, that's why. So I can make an offhand comparison between that and te Jersey jughandle. Because I wrote 3000 words of your help_haiti last night (and it'll probably be around 5500 when done, woo!).
