Even though it was a Saturday it had been a long day for Rachel. Up at 6am to go for a run before heading home to finish the rest of her work out, shower and have some breakfast. After breakfast she headed to school for her extra classes because Rachel wanted Broadway so bad she'd do anything to get there. Dance classes, theater groups, even ( Read more... )

College had been easier than Finn had expected. He breezed through all of his classes as one of the better players on the football team, given a path for a degree in athletics, and passed his time at practice or with Quinn. The two had been together for so long that things just felt routine. No matter what, she would always be his first real love, first real girlfriend, and definitely first heartbreak. As it got closer to graduation, things started to get tense for them. Finn didn't mind the idea of going back to Lima so much, but Quinn seemed dead set against it. Just after New Years, when the two had returned back to Lima for the holidays, Quinn announced that she wouldn't be going back to Yale for her final semester. It seemed whatever had happened with Puck back in high school had picked back up where they had left it, and Finn was on his own once again ( ... )

Reaching for her drink, Rachel took a sip before scrolling to the next page on her book. The sound of her cell bursting into "Defying Gravity" made her jump and she couldn't help but smile to herself. It was probably Kurt, he was always calling her to see when she was free so they could meet up, or even just to have a chat and catch up. Reaching for her cell she looked down at the name on the display and frowned when she saw it was the last person she expected to hear from.

Finn Hudson.

Somewhat nervous and excited at the same time, Rachel flipped open her cell and held it to her ear, letting out a soft breath so she could compose herself. Finn would always be her first real love, the man she'd always felt she was going to grow old with and the man she compared everyone else too. Her own worst enemy really, but they say you never forget your first love, and Rachel had never forgotten him.

"Hello Finn Husdon, to what to I owe this honor?"

Finn didn't move from his spot on the field, phone to his ear and his other hand wrapped tightly around a nearly empty bottle of beer. When he heard her voice he smiled a little but he didn't know why. He was pretty sure it was starting to rain, something he had prayed the night before would hold off until after the game.

He mumbled a few things at first, almost like he was still waiting for her to pick up the phone, but finally something almost clear came out. "You thought I was cool in high school, yeah? I was, totally was. Couldn't dance though...can't. Can't still." A pause for a moment and then he was looking at his phone to quiz it. "This Rachel?"

There was something about the sound of his voice which brought back old memories, but it was the hidden feelings she'd buried deep inside her which stirred more. Finn Hudson, the only man she'd ever really love, the man who got away. Sighing softly she nodded her head, moving to find herself a comfortable position where she sat.

"Yes Finn, it's Rachel and you know exactly what I thought about you at school, if you're calling up to talk about that then I-I..." She paused, drawing in a slow breath, her mind registering his voice, "Are you drunk?" Seriously, he got drunk and nostalgic. Fantastic.

"Am I drunk?" Finn replied, the question almost sounding honest. He went to clear some of the raindrops from his face only to find that his other hand still held a beer bottle, which he quickly finished off. "Now I think so," he confirmed with a nod, though she couldn't see it. Drunk sounded about right.

He shifted around on the field a little, his jersey back on and his pads probably sitting somewhere in the locker room where he had failed at getting them back together. "Whas that song?" He was mumbling again after that, something completely incoherent, but finally his voice broke through the slur in an almost sing song voice in what he was sure was the tune of one of Kurt's favorite songs. "Single laaaadies, I'ma single laaaadies."

Oh, of course he was drunk, why else would he call her. How long had it been since there had been contact which wasn't because they were around someone else or back home in Lima? Shifting in her seat she listened to his voice and she felt a pang in her stomach. What was he doing to himself?

She couldn't help but laugh softly when he started to sing, Rachel remember Kurt and that damn song, she remembered the football match where they'd played it too. "It's 'All the single ladies' Finn." Standing up, Rachel picked up her drink and downed what was left, deciding that she needed to actually have something a little stronger now. "Finn," she said softly as she poured herself a bottle of wine, "Why did you call me?"
