Death Thirteen: Human Again

 [Death had woken up. As he normally didn't sleep, this was odd.

Oh.....well hello skin.

Phone: A familiar voice, many of you are hearing with your ears for the first time ever]

I take it, that all of our regains are gone now. Did I miss a holiday?

[Action:

A. Inside the house, looking at a hand, dressed in normal black clothing.

[Several moments pass while Death waits at the front door wherein he may or may not notice the slight flutter of a curtain in one of the windows. Then, very carefully, the door is unlocked and pulled open. His "great-grandson", looking apprehensive, steps quietly aside to allow him in.]

[He nods as he walks in.]

Lost everything as well I take it?

[strike_you_out]

[A nod.]

You're human again...

[It may not be new, but it's still a bit of a shock seeing Death this way. Slugger quickly closes and bolts the front door, then starts to lead Death into the kitchen.]

Did you get a letter?

[humandeath]

No. Did you?

[strike_you_out]

[Headshake.]

Edward did. I don't know about Susan.

[Placing a wooden bat on the table, he sits.]

[humandeath]

[Death nods.]

What exactly are these letters?

[strike_you_out]

[Staring at nothing in particular, Slugger shares what he's gathered so far.]

Whoever gets one is assigned to kill someone or be punished. They also have someone assigned to kill them, too. If they do it, they receive a reward.

[And his expression darkens.]

So they make a game of me again.

[strike_you_out]

[He says nothing but the answer is obvious.]

Some people will definitely play.

Yes. They always do.

Things have a way of working out.

[strike_you_out]

[Slugger leans over until he's slumped on the table, the lower half of his face buried in his sleeves. When he speaks again, his voice is muffled.]

Be cautious. We could still be targets, letter or not.

[humandeath]

[Death leans over and ruffles his hair. Aw, great-grandson.]

[strike_you_out]

[He sighs, clearly bummed out by this whole ordeal. His fingertips never break contact with the bat.]

It sucks being "human".

[humandeath]

It's certainly something I'd rather avoid.

[Lifting his head a little, he turns to peer up at Death.]

Are you still gonna teach?

[humandeath]

I'll make an appearance in the school. There might be some people there that don't realize what is going on still.
